Restricted Weed<br />
Cabomba<br />
Description: Mostly a submersed aquatic herb. Usually<br />
rooted but sometimes free-floating in mats.<br />
flowers: White or cream, sometimes with a pink tinge at the<br />
end and 2 yellow spots at the base of each petal. 2 cm in<br />
diameter and consisting of 3 petals on short stalks. Appearing<br />
between November and March.<br />
leaves: Submerged leaves opposite or in whorls. Finely<br />
divided into many segments that form a fan shape<br />
approximately 3 cm long. Surface leaves narrow, 2 cm long<br />
and sometimes forked at the tip.<br />
stems: Slender, branched to 2 m long and covered in a thin<br />
mucilaginous (slimy) coating.<br />
Note: Popular aquarium plant. Spreads easily from stem<br />
fragments and can restrict water flows. Weed of National<br />
Significance.<br />
similar Native species: Could be confused with Hornwort<br />
(Ceratophyllum demersum), though Hornwort has a stiffer<br />
texture.<br />
