Hawthorn<br />

Description: An erect deciduous shrub to 6 m tall.<br />

flowers: White, cream or pink, 8-13 mm in diameter and<br />

in flat-topped clusters at the end of small branches. Strongly<br />

scented and occurring in Spring.<br />

leaves: Green and varying from oval to triangular. Divided<br />

into lobes and generally coarsely serrated.<br />

stems: Erect and branched with many small branches ending<br />

in stout spines. Bark rough at base and smoother towards the<br />

top.<br />

fruit: Clusters of deep red berries 8 mm in diameter.<br />

Note: Provides harbour for pest animals and disease such as<br />

Fire Blight.<br />

similar Native species: Unlikely to be confused with native<br />

species.<br />
