Regionally Controlled Weed<br />

Spiny Burr Grass<br />

Cenchrus longispinus<br />

(Innocent Weed, Gentle Annie, Sandbur, Burgrass, Field Burr)<br />

Description: An erect spreading grass to 60 cm tall.<br />

flowers: A spike like head 3-8 cm long, contains up to 40<br />

burrs, each made of 4 florets covered with spines. Spines fine<br />

and purple tinged. Appears between December and April.<br />

leaves: To 20 cm long and 5-8 mm wide, smooth but<br />

sometimes twisted and finely serrated.<br />

stems: Erect or spreading. Several slightly flattened stems<br />

produced from the base. May form new roots from nodes<br />

where they touch soil.<br />

Note: Spikes cause discomfort to people and stock and<br />

contaminate wool.<br />

similar Native species: Unlikely to be confused with native<br />

species.<br />
