SEQUENCE BOUNDARY 3<br />

Sequence boundary 3 was <strong>in</strong>terpreted on <strong>the</strong> basis of<br />

sedimentologic discussions of Crowder (1987, 1989) and<br />

Goff (1990), who divided <strong>the</strong> Fortress Mounta<strong>in</strong> Formation<br />

at Atigun syncl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>to various units based on gross sedi-<br />

mentology (fig. 6). Approximately at midpo<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ex-<br />

posure of <strong>the</strong> Fortress Mounta<strong>in</strong> Formation are th<strong>in</strong> coal<br />

beds overla<strong>in</strong> <strong>by</strong> sandstone and mudstone <strong>in</strong>terpreted as<br />

mar<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> orig<strong>in</strong> (Goff, 1990). The coals could belong to<br />

<strong>the</strong> highstand systems tract of sequence 2 (below sequence<br />

boundary 3), or <strong>the</strong>y may belong to a valley fill <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

lowstand tract of sequence 3 (above sequence boundary 3).<br />

We <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> coals tentatively as part of <strong>the</strong> highstand<br />

tract of sequence 2, based on our prelim<strong>in</strong>ary observations,<br />

although many coals <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cretaceous of <strong>the</strong> Western In-<br />

terior are part of lowstand systems tracts (Van Wagoner<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>rs, 1990). We recognize that more work needs to<br />

be done to def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> placement of a sequence boundary <strong>in</strong><br />

this position. The mudstones conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e pele-<br />

cypods that overlie <strong>the</strong> coals were placed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> transgres-<br />

sive systems tract of sequence 3. In sections that are<br />

proximal to <strong>the</strong> bas<strong>in</strong> marg<strong>in</strong>, as <strong>the</strong> Fortress Mounta<strong>in</strong><br />

Formation probably is, <strong>the</strong> first deposits above <strong>the</strong> se-<br />

quence boundary are commonly part of <strong>the</strong> transgressive<br />

systems tract (fig. 2).<br />

The mar<strong>in</strong>e sandstones and mudstones are overla<strong>in</strong> <strong>by</strong><br />

a thick sequence of channelized conglomerates and con-<br />

glomeratic sandstones <strong>in</strong>terpreted generally as fan-deltaic<br />

or fluvial <strong>in</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>. The sedimentologic characteristics of<br />
