CAPITAL DESTINATION designer wear and artworks – and Curiouser and Curiouser, two shops opposite each other on Broughton Street. But schlepping around the streets of Edinburgh, it has to be said, is tough – it was described by one of this year’s visiting Festival comedians as endlessly uphill no matter what route you choose, “like some kind of Escher painting”. You could always head straight to Harvey Nichols, one of the UK’s oldest but smartest fashion department stores, for their personal shopping service during which you can just sip Champagne and indulge. For two hours – or however long you want – you are guided by colour, textile or mood to get the best out of international labels including some of Scotland’s top designers such as Above: Michelin-starred restaurant The Kitchin can be found on Leith’s waterfront; Left: opulent interiors at The Witchery, near the castle Christopher Kane and Jonathan Saunders. An indulgent way to travel around the city is in the leatherbound comfort of a privately chauffeured car from WL Sleigh, holder of two Royal Warrants to Her Majesty the Queen and HRH Prince Charles. Indeed, Edinburgh is the best place outside of London for a glimpse of royal life. There’s the castle, of course; the Queen’s Edinburgh residence – The Palace of Holyroodhouse – at the other end of the Royal Mile; and the Royal Yacht Britannia at Leith. Whether or not you choose to take a Sleigh ride, it’s worth hiring a car to visit Rosslyn Chapel, some 20 minutes’ drive outside the city. Dating from the 15th century, the ancient, stone-carved chapel featured as the setting for the dénouement of Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code. Its intricate carvings are exquisite – and an incredible feat of craftsmanship. But no visit to Scotland would be complete without a tour of a malt whisky distillery, and Glenkinchie, only 20 miles away but far from the beaten track, offers a fascinating insight into the history of Scotland’s national drink. A wee dram of the finest malt is possibly this country’s greatest, if simplest, luxury. FR Edimbourg bouge ! Londres ? New York ? Milan ? Non ! Edimbourg. 42 november 2012 FLY TO edinburgh six times weekly. brusselsairlines.com MARC MILLAR PHOTOGRAPHY
