To the east of Brussels, leafy
Woluwe-Saint-Lambert is home to
some of the city’s most beautiful
parks, and more than its fair share
of excellent restaurants.
SLEEP The Monty “small design hotel”
(101 Boulevard Brand Whitlock, (0)2
734 5636, monty-hotel.be, rooms from
€75) is true to its name, with Eames
chairs, Ingo Maurer lighting and pieces
by Philippe Starck. It has a red colour
scheme – right down to the red cow
sculpture that greets you on arrival.
EAT A second generation of the
Bacchetta family now run Le Coq en
Pâte (259 Tomberg, (0)2 762 1971),
serving accomplished modern Italian
cooking with a French twist. Fonteyne
the Kitchen (27 Avenue Baron d’Huart,
(0)2 763 4893) is a sit-down offshoot of
much-loved deli Fonteyne, with a menu
of fresh, fairly priced food.
CULTURE Wolubilis (1 Cours Paul-Henri
Spaak) is an inventive multi-disciplinary
centre in a bright, modern space. In
November, the Ballet National de
Marseille will be performing Orpheus
and Eurydice.
SHOP Cook & Book (1 Place du Temps
Libre) was recently voted one of the
world’s most beautiful bookshops, and
it’s easy to see why. The shop and
restaurant are divided into different,
whimsically decorated zones, with
books suspended from the ceiling,
walls made of grass and a vintage
Fiat Cinquecento in one corner.
TIP You can walk along the recently
restored Woluwe waterway that gave
the commune its name. Check out the
pretty Moulin de Lindekemale; one of
only two surviving watermills in Brussels,
it was first mentioned in the city records
in 1129 and is now a restaurant.
UCCLE
Uccle has sweeping Art Deco
avenues and picturesque squares
full of shops and cafés, as well as
acres of surprisingly wild forest.

Uccle’s most beautiful streets, in
a building that was designed for
de Hem by Art Nouveau architect
Ernest Blérot.
EAT Caffè al Dente (85-87 Rue du
Doyenné, (0)2 343 4523) is a friendly
Italian café and enoteca (wine bar),
offering panini and a lunchtime pasta
dish to go with its list of Italian wines.
The early evening apéritifs are always
popular, with free snacks and the best
spritz in town.
SHOP Graphie Sud (195 Rue
Berkendael) is an idiosyncratic but
gare centrale
centraal station
appealing mix of fashion (labels include
Isabel Marant, Maison Martin Margiela
and Orla Kiely), homeware and trinkets:
think rabbit-shaped lamps, beautiful silk
scarves and unusual ceramics.
LATER The Barabar (862 Chaussée de
Waterloo) is something of an institution
in Uccle. Opened in 1978, it is older than
most of its patrons – but the huge bar,
open late into the night, is still buzzing.
TIP Once part of an ancient forest, the
expansive lawns of Wolvendael Park are
the location for a renovated castle and
are bordered with beech and chestnut
trees. Stop for coffee in the small but
stately Louis XV Pavilion café.
