ÖSTERMALM
This beautiful neighbourhood
is the wealthiest part of town,
offering upscale shopping and
velvet-roped nightlife.
SLEEP Story Hotel (6 Riddargatan,
(0)8 545 039 40, storyhotels.com,
rooms from €141/SEK1190) is a
favourite with international style
magazines. The brilliant location and
on-trend bar are just two of the perks.
EAT EAT (15 Jakobsbergsgatan, (0)8
509 20 300) is a stylish, canteen-style
bistro that fuses elements of Asian and
European cooking. Sturekatten
(4 Riddargatan, (0)8 611 1612) sells
lace and antiques, but also strong
coffee, simple sandwiches and fistsized
cinnamon rolls.
CULTURE Smycken på Nordiska
Museet (6-16 Djurgårdsvägen) has a
wonderful collection of jewellery from
the 16th century to the present day.
SHOP Mood (Regeringsgatan/Mäster
Samuelsgatan) isn’t your typical mall.
Artists have pimped every nook and
cranny, including the bathroom,
creating an almost psychedelic
ambience. You won’t find high
street chains here; instead, browse
Scandinavian luxury brands such as
Rodebjer and Pour, or check out Club
Monaco’s preppy hipster offerings.
LATER Hotellet (18 Linnégatan) is
a sleek restaurant and club, frequented
by a well-dressed clientele and a
SÖDERMALM
Without a doubt the hippest area of
Stockholm. Come here for boutique
and vintage shopping, stylish cafés
and the city’s best nightlife.
SLEEP Hotel Hellstens Malmgard
(110 Brännkyrkagatan, (0)8 4650 5800,
hellstensmalmgard.se, rooms from
€117/SEK990) once served as
a country retreat for the Swedish
royalty. It’s now a friendly hotel, with
bold colour schemes and Gustavianstyle
furniture. Approximately 500
metres from the hotel is Tantolunden
Park, a popular winter sledging spot.
EAT You’ll find garlic just about
everywhere at Garlic & Shots
(84 Folkungagatan, (0)8 640 8446),
including in the ice cream and beer.
LATER Södra Teatern (1-3 Mosebacke
Torg) is a party mansion, perched on
the rocky heights of Söder. It stages
some of the best, most eclectic live
music in town, while the panoramic
windows in the bar offer great views
of Stockholm.
KUNGSHOLMEN
The once-desolate area along
the western edge of the island is
changing fast, with new housing
projects and an up-and-coming
bar and restaurant scene.
The Story Hotel’s chic
interiors attract a
design-conscious crowd
SLEEP Hotel M/S Monika
(133 Kungsholms Strand, (0)8 120 92
100, msmonika.se, rooms from €124/
SEK1039) is set aboard a wooden
sailing ship, built in the north in 1908.
Now she’s docked permanently at the
pretty Kungsholms Strand. The small
but cosy rooms are decorated with a
certain nautical flair.
EAT Located on an otherwise
uninspiring street, Restaurang Jonas
(39 Flemminggatan (0)8 650 2220) is
one of Stockholm’s best restaurants,
with two different dining rooms catering
to different budgets. The supremely
popular Flippin’ Burgers (157
Kungsholms Strand, (0)8 210 905),
meanwhile, serves up a slice of
Americana. The burgers are delicious,
as are the truly indulgent, ice creambased
’shakes.
SHOP Grandpa (43 Fridhemsgatan)
is something of a misnomer, as the only
grandfatherly aspect of this lifestyle
boutique is that it sells old-fashioned
board games. Otherwise, it’s best
known for its selection of minimalist
Scandy fashion for men and women
alike. The in-house café makes a
mean espresso.
LATER Colourful Piren restaurant
and bar (2 Kristinebergs Strand)
was one of the first hotspots that
opened in this part of town. The
splendid views over the water serve
as a soothing backdrop to beers
and conversation.
