SLEEP Beat the crowds at the Sagrada Família by visiting early. Booking one of the seven en-suite rooms at nearby B&B Casa Dover (429 Calle Córsega, 672 250 387, casadover.com, rooms from €50) will give you a head start. EAT Treat yourself to one of the city’s top culinary experiences at Alkimia (79 Calle Indústria, 932 076 115). Michelinstarred Jordi Vilà puts his own spin on traditional Catalan cuisine, creating the likes of ostra escabetxada, careta i espinacs (pickled oysters with pork cheek and spinach); at €38, the set menu is great value. For a more lowkey sandwich try Bracafé (45 Avenue Gaudí), a well-established coffee shop with tables on the central boulevard and a loyal local clientele. CULTURE One hundred and thirty years on, Gaudí’s Sagrada Família (401 Calle Mallorca) is still under construction, but a delight to visit. A few minutes’ walk away is another, often overlooked, moderniste monument: the Hospital Sant Pau (167 Calle St Antoni Maria Claret), designed by Gaudí´s contemporary Domènech i Montaner. SHOP The locally-made ‘alternative’ souvenirs sold at Barceloning (332 Calle Mallorca), running from cookery books to jewellery, are far more INFO El Prat Airport is 12km from the city. Bus Aerobuses, one from each terminal, depart every 10 minutes and stop at Plaça Espanya, Plaça Universitat and Plaça Catalunya. Tickets bought on the bus cost €5.75 and the journey takes 30-40 minutes. Train A suburban (Rodalies) train calling at Sants and Passeig de Gràcia takes about 30 minutes. Tickets cost €3.60 but it’s best to buy a T10 train card for €9.45 which comprises 10 train, bus or metro journeys. Taxi A black and yellow taxi to the centre will cost around €25 depending on traffi c and the amount of luggage. Tourist info The main tourist offi ce is at Plaça Catalunya, 932 853 832, barcelona turisme.com FLY TO barcelona three times daily. brusselsairlines.com Unfi nished business: the stupendous interior of the Sagrada Família authentic than the flamenco dresses and fans you’ll find elsewhere – which aren’t, in fact, indigenous to Catalonia. TIP November is low season, and so a good time to visit the Sagrada Família. Still, it’s worth buying tickets online to avoid the queues. SANTA CATERINA & LA RIBERA The narrow streets in this part of the Old Town are home to a historic concert hall – one of the venues for the International Jazz Festival. SLEEP The slick and stylish Grand Hotel Central (30 Via Laietana, 932 957 900, grandhotelcentral.com, rooms from €200) is a vision of understated elegance. By contrast, Pensió 2000 (6 Calle Sant Pere Més Alt, 93 310 7466, pensio2000.com, rooms from €90) is a colourful, homely pension, with views of the Palau de la Música. EAT La Candela (12 Plaça Sant Pere, 933 106 242) serves excellent, marketfresh food at reasonable prices. CULTURE An extravaganza of stained glass, colourful ceramic tiling and ornate brickwork, the Palau de la Música (Calle Sant Pere Més Alt s/n) concert hall was built in 1908. It is best appreciated by attending a performance – and two of the best gigs this month will be legendary octogenarian saxophonist Sonny Rollins (20 November) and jazz pianist Chick Corea (30 November), both in town for the International Jazz Festival. EIXAMPLE DRETA The more elegant part of the Eixample – a district built in the 19th century to relieve overcrowding in the Old Town – contains fine moderniste architecture and high-end fashion stores. SLEEP Its classic Eixample façade, striking modern interiors and daring colour schemes make Hotel 987 Barcelona (288 Calle Mallorca, 934 763 396, 987hotels.com, rooms from €99) a typical Barcelona design fusion. Recently refurbished Hostal Felipe II (329 Calle Mallorca, 934 587 758, hotelfelipe2.com, rooms from €65) is a great option for budget travellers. EAT The 19th-century Mercat de la Concepció (Aragó 313-317) is the place to buy olives, boquerones (marinated anchovies), Iberian ham and fresh fruit. The streets around the market are full of restaurants serving fresh grilled fish. CULTURE This area is dotted with art galleries. On Consell de Cent, drop into Galería Senda (no. 337), Sala Dalmau (no. 349) or Carles Taché (no. 290). SHOP A walk up Passeig de Gràcia takes you past several fashion stores, from chains such as H&M and Zara to Spanish designers like Adolfo Dominguez (no. 32), Caramelo (no. 13) and Catalan Armand Basi (no. 49). november 2012 79
