Aberdeen
No-one celebrates New Year’s Eve quite like
the Scots, so it’s no surprise that locals in
Aberdeen are furious at plans by the city’s
council to cut funding for their Hogmanay
street party from £250,000 (€280,000)
to £150,000. Further disappointment was
caused by the news that the popular concert
– in previous years acts have included The
Proclaimers and Travis – has been axed
and a large Ferris wheel is set to be installed
in its place. Matty White
Madrid
Questions have been mounting as to why
Real Madrid’s hotshot player Cristiano
Ronaldo’s ankle injury has prevented him
from playing for so long. According to the
El Mundo daily newspaper, the reason
could be that he was cursed. Apparently a
wizard by the name of Pepé el Brujo, who is
based in Málaga, has alleged that one of the
footballer’s former lovers asked him to put
a spell on the Portuguese player.
Swedish ice hockey team Leksand were in
hot water last month after it emerged the
team’s players were given a vaccination
against swine fl u before it was made
available to seriously ill patients and
pregnant women. Allegedly, the squad’s
doctor ordered the vaccinations claiming
they were to be used on a specifi c at-risk
group at his practice, but instead gave the
drug to Leksand and the team’s coaches.
