THIS MONTH, world leaders are gathering in Copenhagen for the all-important UN Summit to agree on a new global deal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. European aviation is already in an agreement to curb emissions under the EU’s Emission Trading System, but global aviation and shipping are currently outside any deal, as emissions cannot easily be allocated to any country. The aim of the Copenhagen meeting is therefore to make progress towards a global deal to ensure that all emissions, including aviation’s, are put on a path to future sustainability. easyJet has long been a supporter of the European Emission Trading System, which is currently being implemented and will commence in 2012. This is a signifi cant step forward, but it won’t be enough. I strongly believe that we have to reduce emissions further by setting minimum emission standards for aircraft and by developing ever cleaner technology. The next generation of aircraft, which are under development, should reduce CO2 emissions by up to 50%. easyJet already operates the cleanest aircraft available today, and will continue to call for a more widespread use of the greenest planes across the industry, but to ensure that all airlines fl y state-ofthe-art aircraft we need the EU to set tough minimum emissions standards just as it does for cars and light bulbs. Thanks to emission trading, Europe is ahead of the pack. Let’s make sure it stays that way. EasyJet lleva mucho tiempo apoyando el Régimen de Comercio de Derechos de la Unión Europea. Wir betreiben schon jetzt die saubersten Maschinen, die heute zur Verfügung stehen, und wir werden uns weiterhin für einen breiteren Einsatz der umweltfreundlichsten Flugzeuge in der gesamten Branche einsetzen. Um dies zu unterstützen muss die EU jedoch harte Mindeststandards für Emissionen festlegen, so wie sie das bereits für Autos und Glühbirnen tut. Dank dem Emissionshandel ist Europa hier führend in der Welt. Wir wollen sicherstellen, dass dies auch so bleibt. Notre prochaine génération d’avions, actuellement en cours de développement, devrait réduire jusqu’à 50 % les émissions de CO2. Nous utilisons déjà les avions les plus propres et nous continuerons à pousser pour une utilisation encore plus généralisée de ces avions sur le marché. Mais pour soutenir nos efforts, l’UE doit établir des normes strictes concernant les émissions, comme elle le fait déjà pour les voitures ou les ampoules, par exemple. Grâce au SCEQE, l’Europe montre la voie. Assurons-nous qu’il en demeure ainsi.
