1955, World Press
to promote the
exchange of
the globe with its
This month
the touring show
premier modern
arts hub Cankarjev
Dom. Featuring
winning images
from around
the world, the
exhibition opened
in Amsterdam
in May and will
run until early
next year, visiting
venues around the
globe and providing
a showcase for
creative photo
journalism and
a platform for
development
and funding for
the profession.
Because of the
wide-ranging focus
of the contest,
the collection of
pictures forms an
eyewitness record
of the past year’s
world events and
offers an intimate
and emotive
portrait of our
recent history.
Fête de
Lumières
LYON
Celebrated across
the French city
since 1852, this
spectacular festival
of light returns
with an even larger
programme of
events. As well as
the extension of the
popular installation
along the banks of
the River Rhône all
the way to the Tête
d’Or Park, the main
façade of the iconic
Fourvière Basilica
will be the backdrop
for a 15-minute
light show. Rooted
in an impromptu
candlelit display to
honour the Feast
Roundhouse. With
a juggling Freddie
Mercury-alike
(Mario), a swordswallowing
diva
(Miss Behave) and
a backbreaking
contortionist
(Captain Frodo),
you’ll laugh and
wince in equal
of the Immaculate
Conception, the
tradition has evolved
with the times and
now involves some
of the most hightech
light displays
in the world. All that
said, candles still
play a huge part in
celebrations, with so
many dotted along
people’s balconies
that in excess of
eight million candles
are sold leading
up to the event.
Perhaps this is one
reason why last
year’s electricity bill
didn’t go any higher
than €3000.
lumieres.lyon.fr
measure. Though
the Roundhouse
has hosted eclectic
programmes over
the years, this army
of dancing, bending
and smouldering
shock-and-awe
specialists certainly
takes some beating.
