“The point is that you have to get used<br />

to it,” says Andrej. “If you just start in<br />

December, then it’s going to be pretty<br />

traumatic. We start in the autumn, when<br />

the water is 17 degrees or so. It then<br />

gradually gets colder, until in the depths<br />

of winter, the water is zero degrees or just<br />

half a degree, but of course it never gets<br />

colder than that. Even if the air has some<br />

10 degrees, which happens from time to<br />

time, and water feels much colder, the<br />

water always stops at zero.”<br />

The Berlin Seals were founded in<br />

1978, when lake swimming was a<br />

pastime that was actively encouraged by<br />

the German Democratic Republic. Since<br />

the reunifi cation of Germany, however,<br />

this eccentric hobby has continued partly<br />

on the grounds that it’s a fun, social<br />

activity (Andrej goes every week with his<br />

entire family – even his mother-in-law<br />

comes along for this bizarre, naked<br />

diving into the freezing waters of the<br />
