SEE Painters, ceramicists, sculptors and photographers pay homage to the historic Acquasanta neighbourhood, once famous for its spring waters and where the wealthy had their seaside residences. Check out the works of L’Arte e l’Acquasanta exhibition on Piazza Acquasanta, from 23–31 December. GO Book a tour of the Qanats – amazing works of hydraulic engineering dating back to the Arab period. Canals and rivers run along the natural underground rock, which used to supply water to the city and three are still in existence today (CAI Palermo, tel: 091 329 407). ESCAPE The Piano Battaglia mountains, 90 minutes east of Palermo, is as close as you can get to a true alpine atmosphere without leaving the island. Enjoy the crisp mountain air by hiking or chestnut picking and stop at a chalet restaurant along the coastal areas. NO WAY! Palermo is home to two catacombs (underground burial tombs). As well as the renowned Capuchin cemetery, it has the lesser known, yet more extensive, corso Alberto Amedeo that dates back to the 4th century. GO Paphos wineries are on the up with several winning top prizes at this year’s Cyprus Wine Awards. Visit Shoufas Winery in hill village, Kilinia, and try the Maratheftiko wine. ESCAPE Just 30 minutes from Paphos is Polis, a pretty town surrounded by beautiful nature trails. Enjoy a wintry walk and then head to a restaurant at nearby Latchi harbour. NO WAY! The national cocktail, the Brandy Sour, was specially created for regular visitor to Cyprus, King Farouk of Egypt in the 1930s.
