MAXXI Museum
ROME
After a decade of
stops and starts,
Zaha Hadid’s
sinuous Centre for
Contemporary Arts
in Rome is fi nally
set for inauguration
in spring next year.
Hadid won the
competition for the
building in 1999
and construction
started in 2003,
but its opening
has repeatedly
been delayed due
to government
funding shortfalls.
The MAXXI’s
29,000m 2 site in
northern Rome
incorporates various
existing but disused
19th-century
barrack buildings
and contains two
museums (MAXXI
Art and MAXXI
Architecture),
an auditorium,
library, bookshop,
café, temporary
exhibition spaces
and various open
spaces for live
events, shops and
recreation. Hadid’s
project is conceived
as a central threestorey
atrium and a
series of 15m-wide
curving windowless
concrete galleries
with glazed roofs
that intertwine at
various points. The
result is sure to be
striking and unique.
