The figures "50 feet" <strong>and</strong> "150 feet" referred to in Sections<br />

75.1101, 75.1101-5(b)(1) <strong>and</strong> (2), 75.1101-7(b) <strong>and</strong> 75.1101-14(a)<br />

mean lineal feet of belt entry.<br />

Guidelines for Fire Protection at Surface Located Drive Units for<br />

Underground Belt Conveyors:<br />

1. All belt drive units located within 25 feet of any intake<br />

airway should be equipped with an automatically actuated<br />

fire suppression system as described in this Section.<br />

2. Belt drive units located more than 25 feet but less than<br />

50 feet from any intake airway should be equipped with an<br />

automatically actuated fire suppression system, unless<br />

fire doors or air lock doors are provided in the belt<br />

entry <strong>and</strong> in all intake entries within 50 feet of the<br />

drive unit.<br />

3. Belt drive units located more than 50 feet but less than<br />

100 feet from any intake airway should be equipped with a<br />

sensor system which will automatically sound an alarm <strong>and</strong><br />

stop the conveyor drive motor when a fire occurs on or<br />

near such belt drive.<br />

The alarm shall be at a location where it can be heard by<br />

a responsible person who is always on duty while men are<br />

underground.<br />

If a responsible person is not stationed where he can hear<br />

the alarm <strong>and</strong>/or is not always on duty while the belt is<br />

running <strong>and</strong> miners are underground, a fire door or air<br />

lock should be installed in the belt entry <strong>and</strong> all intake<br />

entries within 100 feet of the belt drive. If the<br />

conditions are not met, a fire suppression system should<br />

be required.<br />

4. Belt drive units located 100 feet or more from any intake<br />

airway should be protected with one or two portable fire<br />

extinguishers as applicable under Sections 75.1100-2(e)(1)<br />

or (e)(2) (electrical installations).<br />

Measurements made to determine the distance between the<br />

drive unit <strong>and</strong> the mine opening should be made between the<br />

belt drive roller <strong>and</strong> the nearest mine opening or intake<br />

airway, as applicable. The fire suppression system, fire<br />

door/air lock doors, <strong>and</strong> sensor controlled stop <strong>and</strong> alarm<br />

described in paragraphs 1, 2, 3 <strong>and</strong> 4 are in addition to<br />
