The title of this article can mislead because for some it could indicate a<br />

sort of effort <strong>de</strong><strong>si</strong>gned to disclose a <strong>de</strong>ep conceptual background able to<br />

shed light upon the way in which we have to un<strong>de</strong>rstand the consumer<br />

behavior in the new market economies from Eastern Europe. Despite this<br />

pos<strong>si</strong>ble perception we want to un<strong>de</strong>rline from the very beginning that our<br />

paper is strictly limited to few relatively general con<strong>si</strong><strong>de</strong>rations about the<br />

status of consumer in Eastern Europe after the collapse of communism.<br />

These con<strong>si</strong><strong>de</strong>rations, as it will be so evi<strong>de</strong>nt, can lately lead to some further<br />

<strong>de</strong>velopments but in this study we will be strictly limit our commentary to<br />

them.<br />

Consumption and consumer in Eastern Europe<br />

after the collapse of communism<br />

The first general observation that we make about the status of the<br />

economies from Eastern Europe after the fall of communism it is linked by<br />

their historic condition in oppo<strong>si</strong>tion with the strong and mature capitalistic<br />

economies from the West. After the collapse of communism the most
