Sustainable Abundance<br />

My strongest motivation for researching and writing this book has<br />

been my increasing belief that it is possible for us to create a Golden<br />

Age of Sustainable Abundance within our lifetimes, This letter to my<br />

best friend from high school days, now a Benedictine monk living at<br />

Lake Titicaca in Southern Peru, explains why.<br />

Letter to a friend<br />

My deer friend Pierre,<br />

I am in the process of writing my next book about a topic that you -<br />

in your monk's retreat near your lake at the edge of the world - will<br />

probably consider of little relevance. Nevertheless, of all the people I<br />

know, you are one of the very few who live in the ultimate luxury - to<br />

be able to dedicate your full time and energy to following your bliss,<br />

your calling, to being who you want to be, without any concern over<br />

money. It is ironic that only monks, who don't own anything, or<br />

possibly the very rich, or the extraordinarily gifted, can afford your<br />

equanimity about money. The rest of us, the vast majority of humans,<br />

even in the richest countries in the world, have succumbed to the<br />

obligation - or you might say the temptation? - of 'making a living'<br />

that does not really coincide with what we really would like to be<br />

doing or being.<br />

How much have we had to give up of our being, of who we really<br />

want to be, in this process of making a living? Many have not even
