The mean age of herd was 5.6 (range 2-14). The relationship between age and Listeria excretion was investigated by comparing the mean age of cows excreting Listeria in their faeces with non-excretors. Age had no effect on faecal excretion each month (Table 6. 9) but the cows excreting Listeria spp. were always younger than non- excretors. When all the animals examined during the study were taken into account there was a significant effect of age on Listeria excretion. The mean age of Listeria shedders was 5 years while it was 7.5 years in non-shedders. This difference was statistically significant (p
