cylinder engine, providing 70 horsepower (hp). The electric motors in<br />

the CSLAB <strong>an</strong>d ALAB cars provide about 40 hp. [3]<br />

For the four-year project period, we used original-equipment-<br />

m<strong>an</strong>ufacturer (OEM) Goodyear Invicta GL radial tires, size P155/80R13.<br />

This is a 44-psi tire with a tread wear rating <strong>of</strong> 280, traction rating A<br />

<strong>an</strong>d temperature rating B. The Invicta weighs about 14.5 lbs. <strong>an</strong>d h<strong>as</strong> a<br />

maximum load rating <strong>of</strong> 959 lbs. (3,836 lbs. <strong>for</strong> a set <strong>of</strong> four).<br />

Each year <strong>for</strong> the ATdS, Goodyear provided a new set <strong>of</strong> tires to<br />

each entr<strong>an</strong>t. In 1998 they supplied a larger tire, the Integra radial<br />

tire, size P165/70R13, which were wider <strong>an</strong>d one pound heavier th<strong>an</strong> the<br />

Invicta. In reaction, we ch<strong>an</strong>ged the wheels on the ALAB car to a<br />

lighter, wider (13x5.5 inch) alloy wheel. At the ATdS that year, after<br />

consulting with Goodyear representatives it w<strong>as</strong> decided to run the<br />

smaller year-old Invicta tires on the new alloy rims. The combination<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong> Invicta tire <strong>an</strong>d the allow wheel is 3 lbs. lighter th<strong>an</strong> the same<br />

tire mounted on the OEM stock steel wheel with hubcap.<br />

CSLAB Car – Winter <strong>of</strong> 1995/1996<br />

In November 1995, the first EV w<strong>as</strong> put into service <strong>an</strong>d the<br />

evaluation beg<strong>an</strong> under this project. This EV w<strong>as</strong> the short-r<strong>an</strong>ge<br />

conventional-sealed-lead-acid-battery car (CSLAB car). It w<strong>as</strong> <strong>as</strong>signed<br />

Connecticut motor vehicle registration number “EV-2.” The CSLAB car is<br />

not equipped with a battery m<strong>an</strong>agement system, so data collection<br />

consisted <strong>of</strong> reading <strong>an</strong>d recording data from various gauges that monitor<br />

electrical usage in the EV. <strong>Evaluation</strong> <strong>an</strong>d data-acquisition activities<br />

were carried out over a five-month winter period. Data were recorded on<br />

ARPA-approved sheets provided by Rideshare in accord<strong>an</strong>ce with vehicle<br />
