The fleet m<strong>an</strong>ager will need to pl<strong>an</strong> <strong>for</strong> disruptions to fleet-car<br />

availability to facilitate ch<strong>an</strong>ging out the battery packs every eighteen<br />

to twenty-four months, the <strong>an</strong>ticipated life <strong>of</strong> a CSLAB.<br />

85 <strong>an</strong>d 95 Ah ALAB-powered <strong>Electric</strong> Subcompact Car<br />

It is recommended that electric subcompacts in the fleet not<br />

utilize the ALAB. The ALAB is prone to early failure, making it very<br />

unreliable <strong>an</strong>d uneconomical in a fleet. The CCEVD <strong>an</strong>d this project<br />

evaluated ALAB batteries produced in 1995, 1996, 1997, <strong>an</strong>d 1998. The<br />

1995 <strong>an</strong>d 1996 production batteries were identical, rated at 95-ampere<br />

hours. The 1997 <strong>an</strong>d 1998 ALAB production batteries also identical,<br />

rated at 85-ampere hours.<br />

Each year when the ALAB w<strong>as</strong> new, the driving r<strong>an</strong>ge <strong>of</strong> the electric<br />

vehicle w<strong>as</strong> sufficient <strong>for</strong> a daily-driving mission <strong>of</strong> <strong>for</strong>ty-five miles<br />

round-trip, <strong>an</strong>d that l<strong>as</strong>ted <strong>for</strong> up to 50 drives. Progressive capacity<br />

losses in the ALAB reduced the single-charge driving r<strong>an</strong>ge over time<br />

throughout the battery pack’s cycle life <strong>an</strong>d made it difficult <strong>for</strong><br />

drivers to know how far they could drive the ALAB car.<br />

Protracted project delays occurred due to battery failures each<br />

year. Charger failures were also a delaying factor in 1997 <strong>an</strong>d 1998.<br />

The project evolved into a four-year ef<strong>for</strong>t to both investigate <strong>an</strong>d<br />

troubleshoot the Adv<strong>an</strong>ced Lead Acid Battery (ALAB) in a subcompact<br />

electric car.<br />
