The number <strong>of</strong> drives in each month is shown in parentheses (Figure<br />

2). In all, the car w<strong>as</strong> driven 2,828 miles in cold weather. The<br />

electric heater w<strong>as</strong> used on 125 <strong>of</strong> the 196 drives. <strong>Electric</strong> windshield<br />

wipers were used on 28 drives <strong>an</strong>d electric lights were run on 31 drives.<br />

Energy w<strong>as</strong> me<strong>as</strong>ured with a separate AC kWh meter at the point where<br />

electricity entered the car. The energy consumed during this winter<br />

period w<strong>as</strong> 1,582 AC kWh, which is the total “wall-plug” energy used <strong>for</strong><br />

motive power plus all automobile accessories. B<strong>as</strong>ed on a $0.106/kWh<br />

utility rate in Connecticut, the retail cost <strong>for</strong> electricity w<strong>as</strong><br />

approximately $0.06/mile driven. At the lower national average cost <strong>of</strong><br />

electricity <strong>of</strong> $0.086/kWh, the cost <strong>of</strong> electricity per mile calculated<br />

to $0.05/mile.
