marking the end <strong>of</strong> the 1997/1998 evaluation period.<br />

Because the car w<strong>as</strong> not working properly during the commuter<br />

evaluation period in 1997, it w<strong>as</strong> not provided to the Consumers Union<br />

automobile testing facility in Moodus <strong>for</strong> their evaluation.<br />

85 Ah ALAB Car – 1998<br />

The five 4-door sed<strong>an</strong>s purch<strong>as</strong>ed by The Connecticut Rideshare Co.<br />

have 1994-production-year motors <strong>an</strong>d belt-type drive trains. In fact,<br />

these cars may have been the l<strong>as</strong>t units built be<strong>for</strong>e the m<strong>an</strong>ufacturer<br />

ch<strong>an</strong>ged its st<strong>an</strong>dard drive train to the quieter direct-drive design. In<br />

1998, to gather data <strong>an</strong>d in<strong>for</strong>mation about the newer motor <strong>an</strong>d drive<br />

train, we upgraded the motor <strong>an</strong>d belt-drive system on our 1995 ALAB car.<br />

The car received a factory upgrade <strong>of</strong> its motor <strong>an</strong>d drive train, making<br />

it essentially a 1998-model EV under the hood. The upgrade w<strong>as</strong><br />

described earlier in the section, “Description <strong>of</strong> B<strong>as</strong>ic Vehicle.”<br />

Also upgraded were the laptop computer <strong>an</strong>d battery-monitoring<br />

s<strong>of</strong>tware. The on-board, 12 Amp, 220-Volt battery charger w<strong>as</strong> replaced<br />

with <strong>an</strong> on-board 22 Amp, 220 Volt Charger. The new charger supplied<br />

20.5 Amp +/- 0.5 Amp, <strong>for</strong> 3.2 kW at 156 Volts DC output. The charger w<strong>as</strong><br />

still controlled by the original 1995 computerized battery m<strong>an</strong>agement<br />

system, but our system did receive a s<strong>of</strong>tware <strong>an</strong>d EPROM upgrade. The<br />

EPROM pr<strong>of</strong>ile supplies 19.8 to 20.8 Amp, <strong>an</strong>d it w<strong>as</strong> <strong>an</strong>ticipated that the<br />

actual amperage r<strong>an</strong>ge would be even narrower, from 19.5 to 20.4 Amp.<br />

For <strong>an</strong> 80% DOD, the new 20.5-Amp charging system w<strong>as</strong> designed to<br />

recharge the ALAB pack in two charging-cycle ph<strong>as</strong>es, <strong>as</strong> follows: 3.5 to<br />

4 hours under the first ph<strong>as</strong>e at the 20-Amp rate to b<strong>as</strong>ically recharge<br />
