The project successfully <strong>as</strong>sembled various battery charging,<br />

monitoring <strong>an</strong>d control equipment components in <strong>an</strong> ef<strong>for</strong>t to overcome<br />

failures <strong>of</strong> the ALAB. Through trial <strong>an</strong>d error, we ultimately<br />

demonstrated that <strong>an</strong> electric vehicle equipped with the ALAB could be<br />

made to run relatively well <strong>for</strong> a short time if restricted to<br />

neighborhood electric operating parameters that avoid high-ampere loads<br />

on the ALAB, if not recharged prior to a minimal 5 percent DOD, <strong>an</strong>d if<br />

not driven dist<strong>an</strong>ces that result in over 70 percent DOD (about 45 miles<br />

or 70 Ah). However, even under these restricted conditions, the ALAB<br />

did not demonstrate sufficient cycle life <strong>for</strong> fleet use.<br />

In the final year, the project observed a useful life <strong>of</strong> ALAB to<br />

be about 50 cycles be<strong>for</strong>e one <strong>of</strong> the thirteen batteries failed, which<br />

limited driving r<strong>an</strong>ge thereafter. Un<strong>for</strong>tunately the replacement<br />

battery, the better <strong>of</strong> two spare ALABs in storage <strong>for</strong> eighteen months,<br />

had lost capacity while in storage. It w<strong>as</strong> one volt lower th<strong>an</strong> the rest<br />

<strong>of</strong> the batteries in the pack. Overall, the largest number <strong>of</strong> cycles on<br />

<strong>an</strong> ALAB pack occurred in the fourth <strong>an</strong>d final year <strong>of</strong> the project, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

w<strong>as</strong> 103 cycles. This w<strong>as</strong> very uneconomical <strong>for</strong> a $6,500 battery pack,<br />

<strong>an</strong>d represents a capital cost <strong>of</strong> $1.66/mile <strong>for</strong> the battery.<br />

Cycle life <strong>of</strong> the ALAB appears to be shortened <strong>as</strong> a result m<strong>an</strong>y<br />

factors: the design <strong>of</strong> the battery, re-charge parameters, opportunity<br />

charging, regenerative braking to a nearly-full ALAB, imprecise re-<br />

charging (amperage fluctuations from the charger), high peak discharge<br />

loads such <strong>as</strong> <strong>for</strong> hard acceleration, <strong>an</strong>d deep discharges <strong>of</strong> the battery<br />

<strong>as</strong>sociated with long drives that require more th<strong>an</strong> 70 percent DOD.<br />
