BOOK ONE — INTRODUCTION<br />

misstatements to pass. this also constitutes <strong>the</strong> dilemma <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> self-appointed defenders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Jews: <strong>the</strong>y may abuse <strong>The</strong> Dearborn Independent, but <strong>the</strong>y cannot disprove <strong>the</strong> facts. <strong>The</strong>y do<br />

not make even an impressive denial <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. <strong>The</strong> whole situation would be much clarified if<br />

Jewish spokesmen would use frankness, instead <strong>of</strong> a fusillade <strong>of</strong> cheap and irrelevant abuse.<br />

<strong>The</strong> year [1921] has witnessed much notable discussion <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> Jewish Question in<br />

Magazines <strong>of</strong> quality. A few have descended to white-washing, fewer still to sheer pro-Jewish<br />

propaganda; but such articles as <strong>the</strong>se in <strong>the</strong> September Century; those in <strong>the</strong> Atlantic for<br />

February, May and July; <strong>The</strong> Nineteenth Century and After for April; <strong>the</strong> true and admirable<br />

accounts by Lieut. Commander Hugo W. Koehler, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S. Navy, in <strong>the</strong> World’s Work for<br />

July, August, September and October — <strong>the</strong>se testify to <strong>the</strong> reality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> matter. <strong>The</strong> more<br />

serious religious press, as represented by publications like <strong>the</strong> Christian Standard, <strong>the</strong> Christian<br />

Century, <strong>The</strong> Moody Monthly which is published by <strong>The</strong> Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, have<br />

also added materially to <strong>the</strong> literature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> question. In editorial vision and liberty <strong>of</strong><br />

discussion, <strong>the</strong> religious press has shown itself to be freer <strong>of</strong> control than has <strong>the</strong> secular press.<br />

This volume contains information dealing with <strong>the</strong> influence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jewish idea on<br />

American life. <strong>The</strong> departments <strong>of</strong> life here studied do not by any means exhaust <strong>the</strong> list. <strong>The</strong><br />

studies are more and more centering on <strong>the</strong> actual operations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jewish program upon <strong>the</strong><br />

American people, and <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> Jewish conceptions on our common life. <strong>The</strong>se studies are<br />

appearing in <strong>The</strong> Dearborn Independent now. <strong>The</strong>y will be ga<strong>the</strong>red into future volumes as may<br />

be required.<br />

From Volume Four<br />

“Aspects <strong>of</strong> Jewish Power in <strong>the</strong> United States”<br />

This is <strong>the</strong> fourth volume <strong>of</strong> reprinted studies in <strong>the</strong> Jewish Question as <strong>the</strong>y appears in<br />

<strong>The</strong> Dearborn Independent. <strong>The</strong> articles follow <strong>the</strong> same general line as <strong>the</strong> previous volume in<br />

showing <strong>the</strong> various angles <strong>of</strong> Jewish influence and achievement in <strong>the</strong> affairs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> United States, but <strong>the</strong>y do not by any means exhaust ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> angles nor <strong>the</strong><br />

depth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> significance in <strong>the</strong> angles traced.<br />

Deliberate public opinion has shown many signs <strong>of</strong> a new alertness to <strong>the</strong> movement<br />

which was proceeding deftly and unnoticed in <strong>the</strong> midst <strong>of</strong> America, and many checks have been<br />

put in operation. <strong>The</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dearborn Independent was undertaken at a disadvantage<br />

because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tremendous emphasis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American mind on racial peace and because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

ease with which racial propagandists can make a purely economic and political matter assume<br />

<strong>the</strong> aspects <strong>of</strong> a religious controversy. <strong>The</strong> Dearborn Independent opened <strong>the</strong> Question to public<br />

gaze, and was <strong>the</strong>refore assumed to be <strong>the</strong> attacker. In this country our sense <strong>of</strong> fairness always<br />

leaves <strong>the</strong> advantage with <strong>the</strong> attacked, and false accusations quickly fall. <strong>The</strong> country has seen,<br />

however, <strong>the</strong> truth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> statements and has observed <strong>the</strong> mild and unprejudiced manner in<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y were made, so that it may now be said that truth had made its way.<br />

Most gratifying are <strong>the</strong> signs which Jews <strong>the</strong>mselves have given that certain abuses must<br />

be quickly stopped. A Jewish leader has appealed for <strong>the</strong> removal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> exemption which<br />

nullifies <strong>the</strong> Constitution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States in favor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jew with reference to <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong><br />
