ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Scholarship is both a very lonely activity and a collective enterprise, as one enters into an
ongoing dialogue with colleagues, both living and “printed” ones. The “printed” friends
are recorded, to the best of my memory, in the footnotes and bibliography. The people I
would like to thank for their help are too many to be included here by name. Thus, only a
few names will be publicly acknowledged in these pages.
Going back some years, I am indebted to the Lutheran World Federation and the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for a scholarship; and to the Lutheran School of
Theology at Chicago for their teaching and accompaniment, which turned me into an
accredited scholar (1994-1999). I hold fond memories of classmates, teachers, school
personnel (especially those at the International Office), and friends who became family
outside the school. I have no words to express my gratitude and respect for my advisor,
the late Wesley J. Fuerst, for his unfailing support and his generous advice throughout the
whole program. In order not to forget any name, at this time I would like to express my
thanks to my friends Carolyn Leeb and Mark Bartusch for sending me copies of their
own books. My special thanks to my good friends Ahida Pilarki and Alejandro Botta,
who always manage to electronically send me any material that may seem important to
my work. That is just one way in which their friendship shows.
Three professors who do not belong to LSTC, but who generously gave of their time
to guide me, deserve my special thanks. These are the late Prof. Tikva Frymer-Kensky
(University of Chicago), Prof. Edward Campbell, Jr. (from McCormick Theological
Seminary), and Prof. André LaCocque (Chicago Theological Seminary). Professor
Phyllis Bird has mentored me since those days, and I would like to express publicly my
debt to her. In particular, chapter 7 of this book owes much to Prof. Bird: not only from
publications on prostitution in the Bible, but also for her careful reading of vast portions
of chapter 7 (any remaining mistakes are mine alone, however).
It took me more than a decade to come back to my dissertation, resume research and
turn it into a book. That would have been impossible without the sabbatical year 2010
granted by my school, the Instituto Universitario ISEDET at Buenos Aires (Argentina),
for which I am most grateful.
Part of the time was devoted to refresh my knowledge of German and to get
bibliography for this book, and to work with a colleague. No words could adequately
convey my gratitude to a good friend of mine, Ms. Renate Murmann, who helped with all
types of logistics, organization, contacts, hospitality, and plain friendship during my time
in Germany. In terms of the financial support for that project, I am deeply indebted to
OKR Johann Schneider (Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland), to OKR Oliver Schuegraf
(Vereinigte Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche Deutschlands) and to Dr. Claudia Jahnel
(Mission EineWelt). My special thanks to Ms. S. von Aderkas, Ms. J.-O. Hong, Mr. H.
Grünwedel and Ms. A. Müller for their kindness during my stay at Collegium
Oecumenicum (Munich). Likewise, Prof. Renate Jost, her assistant Mr. J. Leipziger (and
his wife Ms. Binder) from Augustana Hochschule-Neuendettelsau went beyond courtesy
during the week that I spent at their premises, invited by MissionEineWelt. The highlight
