challenge <strong>the</strong> st<strong>at</strong>us quo and to move people to justice. Ideological criticism is<br />

particularly helpful when one asks whose <strong>in</strong>terests are be<strong>in</strong>g served by a certa<strong>in</strong><br />

depiction of society, of women, and of work. 70<br />

BORROWING FROM EXISTING MODELS<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g made explicit <strong>the</strong> body of research and <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> methodologies, it is<br />

time to review some models, establish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir usefulness for us. The one we<br />

prefer is a model <strong>in</strong> which power is seen as a cont<strong>in</strong>uum, with shades of gray,<br />

r<strong>at</strong>her than black and white compartments.<br />

THE “CONTINUUM OF POWERLESSNESS” MODEL<br />

Gerda Lerner’s work is a history of <strong>the</strong> rel<strong>at</strong>ion of women to history. Th<strong>at</strong><br />

means, on <strong>the</strong> one hand, women have made history from its very beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

while on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand history writ<strong>in</strong>g has ignored woman’s contribution and<br />

particip<strong>at</strong>ion. Lerner traces <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of p<strong>at</strong>riarchy to <strong>the</strong> submission of<br />

woman’s sexuality, beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g with Mesopotamia <strong>at</strong> a time before history<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g, priv<strong>at</strong>e property, and classes. Thus, as city-st<strong>at</strong>es grew and empires<br />

formed, submission of <strong>the</strong>ir women and submission of enemies were not foreign<br />

to each o<strong>the</strong>r, but <strong>the</strong> two sides of <strong>the</strong> same co<strong>in</strong>. This is how she sees <strong>the</strong><br />

beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> process.<br />

The appropri<strong>at</strong>ion by men of women’s sexual and reproductive capacity<br />

occurred prior to <strong>the</strong> form<strong>at</strong>ion of priv<strong>at</strong>e property and class society. Its<br />

commodific<strong>at</strong>ion lies, <strong>in</strong> fact, <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> found<strong>at</strong>ion of priv<strong>at</strong>e property ...<br />

Men learned to <strong>in</strong>stitute dom<strong>in</strong>ance and hierarchy over o<strong>the</strong>r people by <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

earlier practice over <strong>the</strong> women of <strong>the</strong>ir own group. This found expression <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutionaliz<strong>at</strong>ion of slavery, which began with <strong>the</strong> enslavement of women<br />

of conquered groups ....<br />

<strong>Women</strong>’s sexual subord<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>ion was <strong>in</strong>stitutionalized <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> earliest law codes<br />

and enforced by <strong>the</strong> full power of <strong>the</strong> st<strong>at</strong>e. <strong>Women</strong>’s cooper<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> system<br />

was secured by various means: force, economic dependency on <strong>the</strong> male head<br />

of <strong>the</strong> family, class privileges bestowed upon conform<strong>in</strong>g and dependent<br />

70 The m<strong>at</strong>ter is, however, far more complic<strong>at</strong>ed, as Newsom’s analysis, for <strong>in</strong>stance, shows<br />

(“Reflections on Ideological Criticism and Postcritical Perspectives,” 542–44). For <strong>the</strong>re are several<br />

different understand<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> words “ideology,” “(false) consciousness,” “power,” or “reality.” My<br />

preferences lie with those who see “ideology” as somehow similar to a political worldview, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

sense th<strong>at</strong> an ideology expla<strong>in</strong>s how <strong>the</strong> world works, who is “<strong>in</strong>” and who is “out,” who deserves<br />

better, and so forth.
