PROSTITUTES AND OTHER SEX WORKERS<br />

CONCEPTUAL DIFFICULTIES<br />

At least <strong>the</strong>se ma<strong>in</strong> conceptual difficulties may be identified when seek<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

sex workers of <strong>the</strong> ANE (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Israel):one difficulty lies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wide range<br />

of mean<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> stem הנז, from <strong>the</strong> exercise of prostitution to idol<strong>at</strong>ry.<br />

Secondly, <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> added difficulty of centuries-long biased transl<strong>at</strong>ions and<br />

<strong>in</strong>terpret<strong>at</strong>ions, which have found secular and sacred prostitutes <strong>in</strong> every<br />

reference to women unaccounted for. Thus, it is one of <strong>the</strong> fem<strong>in</strong>ist scholar’s<br />

are dowries <strong>in</strong>volved, and <strong>in</strong> which money was not <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> means of exchange,<br />

apply, be<strong>in</strong>g sex tourism, exploit<strong>at</strong>ion of girls and boys for pornography, traffic<br />

of women and girls for “accompaniment” dur<strong>in</strong>g events such as <strong>the</strong> soccer world<br />

championship, and an <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>at</strong>ional web of bro<strong>the</strong>ls <strong>in</strong> which abducted girls and<br />

women are kept captive for prostitution, some of <strong>the</strong> darkest modes of this trade.<br />

Modes of which we do not hear <strong>in</strong> our sources, although it is not hard to imag<strong>in</strong>e<br />

th<strong>at</strong> some of <strong>the</strong>m would have been already part of a captive’s f<strong>at</strong>e, for <strong>in</strong>stance.<br />

At any r<strong>at</strong>e, it is important to determ<strong>in</strong>e if and when an accus<strong>at</strong>ion of “play<strong>in</strong>g<br />
