RECYCLING - We have completed our first year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> recycling<br />

program. While <strong>the</strong> rate <strong>of</strong> recycling slowed down during 1991, <strong>the</strong><br />

program remains very popular with over 65% voluntary participation.<br />

Approximately 750 tons <strong>of</strong> recyclable materials were collected. In December<br />

we added polystyrene to <strong>the</strong> list <strong>of</strong> recyclables collected in <strong>Hampton</strong>.<br />

We are in our third year <strong>of</strong> chipping Christmas trees collected in <strong>Town</strong>.<br />

SIDEWALKS - The department reconstructed <strong>the</strong> sidewalk on <strong>the</strong> east<br />

side <strong>of</strong> Lafayette Rd. from <strong>the</strong> Swain Ct.<br />

to Winnacunnet Rd. We also<br />

rehabilitated portions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sidewalks on Moulton Rd. and High Street with<br />

a new 1" hot-top surface. *<br />

TREATMENT PLANT-The average flow received at our WWTP was 2.1<br />

million gallons per day for a total annual flow <strong>of</strong> 775.72 million gallons,<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r 5.9 million gals, <strong>of</strong> septage was received. These are all slightly down<br />

from last year. We processed 4-,062 yds. <strong>of</strong> sludge which is currently<br />

disposed <strong>of</strong> in <strong>the</strong> landfill. In July <strong>of</strong> this year we began receiving flows from<br />

<strong>the</strong> new town <strong>of</strong> Rye collection system and billed for service. We also added<br />

dechlorination to our treatment process as mandated by <strong>the</strong> Federal EPA to<br />

keep <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> chlorine discharged into <strong>the</strong> marsh at a level that is<br />

acceptable to animal and plant growth. Much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work necessary to add<br />

this process was done by department personnel. As always, careful monitoring<br />

is conducted to insure proper effluent quality. Your Wastewater<br />

Treatment Plant is functioning well and in accordance with our N.P.D.E.S.<br />

Permit, issued by <strong>the</strong> U.S. E.P.A.<br />

DRAINS - Several small drainage projects were completed including<br />

new storm drains on Brown Ave. Used for <strong>the</strong>se projects was 14 catch<br />

basins, 1,139' <strong>of</strong> pipe ranging in size from 6" to 27" and miscellaneous<br />

fittings. 335 catch basins were cleaned with <strong>the</strong> catch basin cleaning truck.<br />

SEWERS -The largest <strong>of</strong> our sewer replacement work this season was on<br />

Homestead Circle. Using 832' <strong>of</strong> pipe, various fittings and 2 manholes, <strong>the</strong><br />

project included relaying 14 service laterals. Elsewhere in town <strong>the</strong> crew<br />

repaired 1 1 and installed 1 7 new sewer laterals. There were 50 new<br />

entrances into our sanitary sewer system requiring 74 inspection; 59<br />

permits were issued. There were 231 locations made for contractors, utility<br />

companies and <strong>the</strong> public. In addition, 21 calls for plug-ups were handled,<br />

<strong>of</strong> which 10 were <strong>the</strong> responsibility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Town</strong>. We cleaned 23,710' <strong>of</strong><br />

sewer lines with <strong>the</strong> Sewer Jet.<br />
