If we would br<strong>in</strong>g before our souls this mystery of the Word, the<br />

Word <strong>in</strong> its fullness, as it worked and was understood, <strong>in</strong> the age when<br />

the full significance of the Gospel of St. John was still felt, we must<br />

say to ourselves: In the old consciousness of man, spirit was present<br />

<strong>in</strong> the word—even <strong>in</strong> the feeble word that was used <strong>in</strong> speech. Spirit<br />

poured <strong>in</strong>to the word and was the power with<strong>in</strong> it.<br />
