4.7.4: Solar panels and solar shingles must be installed on back facing ro<strong>of</strong> slopes and lay flat on<br />

the ro<strong>of</strong> slope. They must not be visible from the public right-<strong>of</strong>-way or from streets including side<br />

streets for corner or interior lots.<br />

4.7.5: Southern exposures receive sunlight during the entire day, making them the ideal location<br />

for solar panels or shingles. However, solar panels and shingles are not permitted for the front<br />

(south) ro<strong>of</strong> slope <strong>of</strong> south-facing buildings. Solar panels and solar shingles are better suited for<br />

north-facing buildings whose south-facing ro<strong>of</strong> slope is only visible from the back yard.<br />

4.7.6: Solar panels for south-facing buildings are encouraged as free-standing solar panels installed<br />

in a back yard and out <strong>of</strong> public view.<br />

4.7.7: Solar panels may be installed in back yards, as long as the height <strong>of</strong> the panel and the<br />

mounting system combined is less than six feet tall and they are not visible from the public right<strong>of</strong>-way<br />

and adjacent properties.<br />

4.7.8: Wind turbines require open space to harness energy from moving air which usually means<br />

that equipment needs to be installed at a height taller than any other structures or trees. This energy<br />

generation method will likely not prove practical in urban historic districts and is not permitted.<br />

4.7.9: The Historic Preservation Commission may reconsider permitting wind turbines if sufficient<br />

advances are made in the technology to ensure compatibility with historic buildings and districts,<br />

for example, by meeting the requirements for landscape elements in back yards (not visible from<br />

the public right-<strong>of</strong> way or neighboring properties and less than six feet tall).<br />
