Preservation Standards AND <strong>Guidelines</strong> August 1, 2012<br />

REPLICATE means to copy or reproduce an historic building or element.<br />

REPOINTING means repairing existing masonry joints by removing defective mortar and installing<br />

new mortar.<br />

RESTORATION means the act or process <strong>of</strong> accurately depicting the form, features and character <strong>of</strong><br />

a project as it appeared at a particular period <strong>of</strong> time.<br />

RHYTHM means a regular pattern <strong>of</strong> shapes including but not limited to windows, doors, projections,<br />

and heights within a building, structure, or monument, or a group <strong>of</strong> the same.<br />

RIGHT OF WAY means the land used for a transportation corridor, such as a street, alley or railroad;<br />

typically owned and maintained by the government.<br />

SCALE means the harmonious proportions <strong>of</strong> parts <strong>of</strong> a building, structure or monument to one another<br />

and to the human figure.<br />

SCREENING means construction or vegetation which the essential function is to separate, protect,<br />

conceal, or shield from view but not support.<br />

SETBACK means the required distance between every structure and the lot line <strong>of</strong> the lot on which it<br />

is located. See ―Yard,‖ ―Yard, Corner Side,‖ ―Yard, Front,‖ ―Yard, Rear,‖ and ―Yard, Side.‖<br />

SHUTTER means a hinged panel that closes a window or door opening in addition to the standard<br />

door or window, may be solid, or with cutouts or ventilation slats.<br />

SIGN means any structure or part there<strong>of</strong> or any device, permanently or temporarily attached to,<br />

painted on, supported by, or represented on a building, fence, post, or other structure which is used or<br />

intended to be used to attract attention. ―Sign‖ shall not include flag, pennant, or insignia <strong>of</strong> any nation,<br />

association <strong>of</strong> nations, State, <strong>City</strong>, or other political unit.<br />

SIGNIFICANT CHARACTERISTICS <strong>of</strong> HISTORICAL or<br />

ARCHITECTURAL RESOURCES:<br />

Those characteristics that are important to or expressive <strong>of</strong> the historical, architectural or cultural quality<br />

and integrity <strong>of</strong> the resource and the setting and includes but is not limited to building material,<br />

detail, height, mass, proportion, rhythm, scale, setback, setting, shape, street accessories, and workmanship.<br />

The following definitions shall apply:<br />

A. Building Materials: The physical characteristics that create the aesthetic and structural<br />

appearance <strong>of</strong> the resource, including but not limited to, a consideration <strong>of</strong> the texture and<br />

style <strong>of</strong> the components and their combinations, such as brick, stone, shingle, wood, concrete<br />

or stucco.<br />

B. Detail: Architectural aspects that, due to particular treatment, draw attention to certain<br />

parts or features <strong>of</strong> a structure.<br />

C. Height: The vertical distance from the average grade level to the average level <strong>of</strong> the ro<strong>of</strong>.<br />

D. Proportion: The dimensional relationship between one part <strong>of</strong> a structure or appurtenance<br />

and another.<br />

E. Rhythm: See ―Rhythm.‖<br />
