VERNACULAR means a building built without being designed by an architect or someone with similar<br />

formal training; <strong>of</strong>ten based on traditional or regional forms; not high style.<br />

VISIBILITY FROM A PUBLIC WAY means able to be seen from any public right-<strong>of</strong>-way, or other<br />

place, whether privately or publicly owned, upon which the public is regularly allowed or invited to<br />

be.<br />

WALL means a structure or hedgerow that provides a physical barrier, typically constructed <strong>of</strong> a solid<br />

material such as stone or rock.<br />

YARD: means an open space at grade, other than a court or plaza, between a structure and the adjacent<br />

lot lines, unoccupied and unobstructed by any portion <strong>of</strong> a structure from the ground upward, except<br />

where otherwise specifically provided in this chapter. In measuring a yard for the purpose <strong>of</strong> determining<br />

the depth <strong>of</strong> the front yard, rear yard or side yard, the minimum horizontal depth between<br />

the lot line and a building or structure shall be used.<br />

YARD, CORNER SIDE: means a side yard on a corner lot which abuts a street.<br />

YARD, FRONT:<br />

A. An open area facing and abutting a street and extending across the front <strong>of</strong> the lot between<br />

the side lot lines and having a minimum horizontal depth measured from the street equal<br />

to the depth <strong>of</strong> the minimum front yard specified for the district in which the lot is located.<br />

The required front yard line represents the line in front <strong>of</strong> which no building or structure<br />

may be erected, other than steps, unenclosed porches, canopies, marquees and carports as<br />

may be permitted in this chapter.<br />

B. In commercial or industrial uses, the front yard shall always be adjacent to an expressway<br />

or arterial if the lot abuts such a facility.<br />

YARD, REAR: An open area that extends across the rear <strong>of</strong> the lot between side lot lines and which<br />

has a minimum depth measured from the rear lot line as specified for the zoning district in which the<br />

lot is located. Steps, unenclosed porches and unenclosed balconies may extend into the rear yard as<br />

may be permitted in this chapter. On both corner lots and interior lots, the rear yard shall, in all cases,<br />

be at the opposite end <strong>of</strong> the lot from the front yard.<br />

YARD, SIDE: An open area which extends between the required front yard and the required rear<br />

yard, and has a minimum width measured from the side lot line as specified for the zoning district in<br />

which the lot is located. Steps may extend into a side yard as may be permitted in this chapter.<br />

ZONING DISTRICTS: A section <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong> designated in the text <strong>of</strong> this chapter and delineated on<br />

the Official Zoning Districts Map, for which land use requirements, and building and development<br />

standards are prescribed.<br />
