Preservation Standards AND <strong>Guidelines</strong> August 1, 2012<br />

BOARD AND BATTEN means a type <strong>of</strong> wall cladding where applied boards are closely spaced, usually<br />

placed vertically, the joints <strong>of</strong> which are covered by narrow wood strips.<br />

BRIDGE means a structure that spans over a depression or waterway; typically carries a transportation<br />

way such as a footpath, road or railway.<br />

BUILDING FACADE means the exterior elevation <strong>of</strong> a building, extending from grade to the top <strong>of</strong><br />

the eaves, wall, or parapet, extending the entire length <strong>of</strong> the building and fronting on public or private<br />

streets.<br />

CANOPY means any structure other than an awning, made <strong>of</strong> cloth, metal, or other materials with a<br />

frame either attached to, or projecting from, a building, and carried by a frame supported by the<br />

ground or sidewalk.<br />

CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS (CA) means the <strong>of</strong>ficial document issued by the Historic<br />

Preservation Commission approving any application for permission to construct, erect, demolish,<br />

relocate, reconstruct, restore or alter any structure designated by the authority <strong>of</strong> this chapter.<br />

CHARACTER means attributes, qualities and features that make up and distinguish a particular place<br />

or development and give such a place a sense <strong>of</strong> definition, purpose and uniqueness.<br />

CHARACTER-DEFINING means those architectural materials and features <strong>of</strong> a building that define<br />

the historic nature or character <strong>of</strong> the building. Such elements may include the form <strong>of</strong> the building,<br />

exterior cladding, ro<strong>of</strong> materials, door and window design, exterior features such as canopies and<br />

porches, exterior and interior trim, etc.<br />

COLUMN means a slender, vertical element that supports part <strong>of</strong> a building or structure.<br />

COMMISSION means the Historic Preservation Commission <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oklahoma</strong> <strong>City</strong>.<br />

COMPATIBILITY means the characteristics <strong>of</strong> different uses or activities that permit them to be located<br />

near each other in harmony and without conflict.<br />

CONSTRUCTION means the act or business <strong>of</strong> building a structure or part <strong>of</strong> a structure.<br />

CONTRIBUTING STRUCTURE means a structure that retains its essential architectural integrity <strong>of</strong><br />

design and whose architectural style is typical <strong>of</strong> or integral to a historic district.<br />

CORNER SIDE FACADE means a facade facing a side street.<br />

CORNER SIDE FENCE means a fence adjacent to a side street.<br />

CORNER SIDE YARD means a side yard abutting a street.<br />

CORNICE means a horizontal projecting band that caps a building parapet or ro<strong>of</strong>.<br />

CONTRIBUTING BUILDING/STRUCTURE/SITE means a building or site which reinforces the<br />

visual integrity or interpretability <strong>of</strong> a historic district. A contributing building is not necessarily<br />

"historic" (50 years old or older). A contributing building may lack individual distinction but may add<br />

to the historic district's status as a significant and distinguishable socio-cultural entity.<br />

COPING means a protective cap, top or cover <strong>of</strong> a wall or parapet, <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>of</strong> stone, terra cotta, concrete,<br />

metal or wood. This may be flat, but commonly is sloping to shed water.<br />

DEMOLITION means an act or process that destroys or razes a structure or its appurtenances in part<br />

or in whole, or permanently impairs its structural integrity, including its ruin by neglect <strong>of</strong> necessary<br />

maintenance and repairs.<br />

DEMOLITION BY NEGLECT means the act or process <strong>of</strong> neglecting the maintenance and repairs<br />

<strong>of</strong> a building, thus allowing the building to deteriorate to the point where demolition may be necessary.<br />
