APPENDIX A<br />

DEFINITIONS<br />

The following terms are used throughout these Standards and <strong>Guidelines</strong>. Some <strong>of</strong> these terms are<br />

also found in the <strong>Oklahoma</strong> <strong>City</strong> Municipal Code, 2010, Chapter 59—Zoning and Planning Code,<br />

Article II.<br />

Definitions:<br />

ACCESSORY BUILDING means a subordinate building or a portion <strong>of</strong> the main building, the use <strong>of</strong><br />

which is located on the same lot and is incidental to the dominant use <strong>of</strong> the main building or premises.<br />

ADDITION or EXPANSION means an increase in floor area <strong>of</strong> a building, or a modification to the<br />

ro<strong>of</strong> line <strong>of</strong> a building, such as the construction <strong>of</strong> a dormer, that increases the amount <strong>of</strong> floor space<br />

devoted to human use or occupancy.<br />

ALLEY means a public right-<strong>of</strong>-way that normally affords a secondary means <strong>of</strong> access to abutting<br />

property.<br />

ALTERATION means any change in size, shape, character, occupancy or use <strong>of</strong> a building or structure.<br />

Major Alteration means an alteration, which affects the historic, cultural, or architectural integrity,<br />

interpretability, or character <strong>of</strong> a building, structure, site or district. Generally includes the kind <strong>of</strong><br />

work which is normally done with the aid <strong>of</strong> a pr<strong>of</strong>essional drafter or pr<strong>of</strong>essional quality plans.<br />

Minor alteration means an alteration, which does not significantly affect the historic, cultural, or architectural<br />

integrity, interpretability, or character or a building, structure, site or district. Generally includes<br />

the kind <strong>of</strong> work, which is normally done without the aid <strong>of</strong> a pr<strong>of</strong>essional drafter or pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

quality plans.<br />

APPROPRIATE means typical <strong>of</strong> the historic architectural style, compatible with the character <strong>of</strong> the<br />

historic district, and consistent with these preservation criteria.<br />

ARCHITECTURAL SHINGLES means composition asphalt ro<strong>of</strong> shingles that are heavier weight<br />

and are irregularly sized that resemble the random textured look <strong>of</strong> wood shingles.<br />

ARCHITECTURAL STYLE means a category <strong>of</strong> architecture <strong>of</strong> similar buildings distinguished by<br />

similar characteristics <strong>of</strong> construction, design, materials, etc. Typical styles in <strong>Oklahoma</strong> <strong>City</strong> include<br />

Vernacular, Classical Revival, Craftsman, Queen Anne and Mission.<br />

AWNING means a fixed shelter <strong>of</strong> any material, and <strong>of</strong> any length, not supported by a column or<br />

posts from the ground and attached to a building.<br />

BALCONY means a platform that projects from the exterior wall <strong>of</strong> a building above the ground<br />

floor, which is exposed to the open air, has direct access to the interior <strong>of</strong> the building, and is not supported<br />

by posts <strong>of</strong> columns extending to the ground.<br />
