Preservation Standards AND <strong>Guidelines</strong> August 1, 2012<br />
MORTAR MIX means the chemical composition (and proportions <strong>of</strong> these ingredients) <strong>of</strong> the mortar<br />
used in masonry.<br />
MOVING means the relocation <strong>of</strong> a structure on its site or to another site.<br />
NATURAL FEATURES means features or elements <strong>of</strong> the exterior environment that are substantially<br />
unaltered by human activity such as landforms, trees, plants, rivers and lakes.<br />
NEW CONSTRUCTION means the act <strong>of</strong> adding to an existing structure or erecting a new principal<br />
or accessory structure or appurtenances to a structure, including but not limited to buildings, extensions,<br />
outbuildings, fire escapes and retaining walls.<br />
NON-CONTRIBUTING (BUILDING/STRUCTURE/SITE) means a building, structure or site that<br />
does not add to the historic significance <strong>of</strong> a property or district, and which detracts from the visual<br />
integrity or interpretability <strong>of</strong> a historic district.<br />
ORDINARY MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR means any work meant to remedy damage or deterioration<br />
<strong>of</strong> site elements or a structure or its appurtenances that involves no change in materials, dimensions,<br />
design, configuration, texture, surface coating or visual appearance.<br />
ORNAMENTATION means any decorative objects or series <strong>of</strong> objects, which are added to the basic<br />
structure to enhance its visual appearance.<br />
PARAPET means the part <strong>of</strong> an exterior wall, which extends entirely above the ro<strong>of</strong>.<br />
PARKING LOT means any <strong>of</strong>f-street, unenclosed, ground-level facility used for the purpose <strong>of</strong> temporary<br />
storage <strong>of</strong> vehicles, which cannot exceed seven days. Enclosed parking facilities, such as multistory<br />
garages or parking facilities constructed within the confines <strong>of</strong> a larger building or structure, or<br />
parking facilities associated with single-family and two-family residential developments are not included<br />
within this definition.<br />
PARKING STRUCTURE means a structure (building), which houses parked vehicles.<br />
PERGOLA means an open grid, supported by rows <strong>of</strong> columns, for growing vines; most <strong>of</strong>ten a series<br />
<strong>of</strong> wood beams supporting narrow boards supported by wood columns; may be attached to a<br />
building or covering a garden or walkway.<br />
PORCH means a covered and floored area <strong>of</strong> a building, especially a house, that is open at the front<br />
and usually the sides.<br />
PORTE-COCHERE means a covered or uncovered platform that projects from the exterior wall <strong>of</strong> a<br />
building, has direct access to the street level <strong>of</strong> the building, and has no ro<strong>of</strong> supporting walls on three<br />
sides, and which may be supported by posts.<br />
PRESERVATION means the adaptive use, conservation, protection, reconstruction, restoration, rehabilitation<br />
or stabilization <strong>of</strong> sites, buildings, districts, structures or monuments significant to the heritage<br />
<strong>of</strong> the people <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oklahoma</strong> <strong>City</strong>. The following definitions shall apply:<br />
A. Adaptive use: The restrained alteration <strong>of</strong> an historical or architectural resource to accommodate<br />
uses for which the resource was not originally constructed, but in such a way so as<br />
to maintain the general historical and architectural character.<br />
