TOWN OF PHIPPSBURG<br />

John A. M<strong>of</strong>fitt<br />

February 3, 1924 - July 2, <strong>2012</strong><br />

John was drafted during World War II, and entered the U. S. Navy in June, 1942. He served aboard the destroyer<br />

Escort USS Richard S. Bull in the Pacific, and saw action in the Leyte Gulf Campaign during the Battle <strong>of</strong><br />

the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in December 1945 as a machinist, second class. For his service<br />

John was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal (5 stars) and the Philippine<br />

Liberation Medal (2 stars).<br />

John was a lifelong resident <strong>of</strong> Maine, and worked as a machinist at the Hyde Windlass Company in Bath<br />

from 1945 until it was purchased and absorbed by the Bath Iron Works in 1969.<br />

John and his wife Francis built a home on Fiddlers Reach after their retirement. John was appointed and<br />

served as the <strong>Phippsburg</strong> Code Enforcement Officer for several years until he was elected a <strong>Phippsburg</strong> Selectman/<br />

Assessor. He resigned this position following the untimely death <strong>of</strong> his wife Francis.<br />

John had many hobbies and interests and after retirement spent much time making wooden toys and Christmas<br />

ornaments for his family, especially for his grandchildren. He also made and donated the replica <strong>of</strong> the original<br />

wooden sign board on the front <strong>of</strong> <strong>Town</strong> Hall.<br />
