for the first 9-12 credit hours in order to continue in<br />
the program. The department may pose other requirements<br />
for official admission.<br />
2. Any prospective student may enroll in graduate-level<br />
courses, prior to applying for official admission into<br />
the graduate program, by completing a temporary<br />
(Post-Baccalaureate application form (on-line). These<br />
courses (limited to 4 graduate-level courses or 12 credit<br />
hours) may be applied toward the degree requirements<br />
upon official admission.<br />
Required Coursework<br />
1. All graduate students must complete either COM 582<br />
or COM 584 regardless of their program emphasis.<br />
2. A total of 36 credit hours are required for completion<br />
of the master’s program.<br />
• 9 hours of Theory courses<br />
• 9 hours of Application/Research Methods courses<br />
• 15 hours of elective work<br />
Students may take graduate level courses outside the department in<br />
consultation with their advisors. Please note that no more than 9<br />
hours may be taken outside the department.<br />
Students are permitted two independent studies/directed readings in<br />
the course of their studies, which will be listed as a COM 590 course.<br />
Student may take no more than 6 credit hours at the 400 level in<br />
consultation with their advisors<br />
Advisor Selection/Examination Committee<br />
1. Upon completion of 9 credit hours, student must<br />
select a graduate faculty mentor/advisor (examination<br />
committee chair).<br />
2. The student and the advisor will plan a course of<br />
study for the remaining 27 credit hours.<br />
3. Prior to the completion of the 24th credit hour,<br />
students must select two remaining committee<br />
members for their advisory committees.<br />
4. The student and the committee will discuss and<br />
determine an appropriate graduation examination<br />
format. Usual options include:<br />
• Comprehensive Exams<br />
• Conference Quality Paper<br />
• Performance/Creative Project<br />
• Thesis<br />
Transfer of Credits<br />
No more than 9 credits (3 courses) from other accredited<br />
institutions, taken within 10 years prior to completion of<br />
degree program, may be accepted at the discretion of the<br />
Department.<br />
