MA 041 INTERMEDIATE ALBEGRA<br />

(Class 3)<br />

The purpose of this course are to strengthen and expand the<br />

students basic algebraic skills and problem-solving capabilities<br />

and to prepare them for higher level mathematics courses.<br />

MA 100 AN INTRODUCTION TO<br />

MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES<br />

(Class 1, Cr. 1)<br />

This course is intended to: integrate freshman mathematics<br />

majors into the department, help them adjust to university<br />

life, assist them in developing their academic and intellectual<br />

capabilities; introduces them to contemporary issues in mathematics,<br />

provide an overview of the careers open to those<br />

with degrees in mathematics. This course must be taken<br />

Pass/No Pass only. Credit by exam is not available for this<br />

course.<br />

MA 115 INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA<br />

The purpose of this course is to strengthen and expand student's<br />

basic algebraic skills and problem-solving capabilities<br />

and to prepare them for higher level mathematics courses.<br />

For the purposes of general education requirements, Math<br />

115 is not a collegiate level mathematics course, and therefore<br />

cannot be used to satisfy the general education requirement<br />

for mathematics at <strong>Purdue</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Calumet</strong>.<br />

MA 137 MATHEMATICS FOR ELEMENTARY TEACHERS I<br />

(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />

Designed for prospective elementary school teachers.<br />

Problem solving, Numberical reasoning including self-generated<br />

and conventional algorithms. Whole and fractional number<br />

systems, elementary number theory. (At <strong>Purdue</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> West Lafayette, not available for credit in the<br />

School of Science.)<br />

MA138 MATHEMATICS FOR ELEMENTARY TEACHERS II<br />

(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />

Prerequisite: MA 137<br />

Continues the study of number systems through integers,<br />

rational numbers and real numbers. Quantitative and proportional<br />

reasoning is a foundation for algebraic reasoning.<br />

Elementary statistical and probabilistic reasoning. (Not<br />

available for credit in the School of Science.)<br />

MA139 MATHEMATICS FOR ELEMENTARY TEACHERS III<br />

(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />

Prerequisite: MA 137<br />

Geometric, measurement and spatial reasoning in one, two<br />

and three dimensions as the basis for elementary school<br />

geometry. Metric and non-metric geometry, transformation<br />

geometry. (At <strong>Purdue</strong> <strong>University</strong> West Lafayette, not<br />

available for credit in the School of Science.)<br />

MA147 ALGEBRA AND TRIGONOMETRY<br />

FOR TECHNOLOGY<br />

(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />

Prerequisite: MA 041 and MA 031 NOT open to students with credit in<br />

MA 151 or 153<br />

MA 147 and 148 is a two semester sequence in algebra and<br />

trigonometry for students in technology. The emphasis is on<br />

technique and problem solving. MA147 concentrates on topics<br />

in algebra.<br />

MA148 ALGEBRA AND TRIGONOMETRY<br />

FOR TECHNOLOGY II<br />

(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />

Prerequisite: MA 147 Not open to students with credit in MA 151<br />

or MA 154.<br />

Continuation of MA 147. MA 148 concentrates on trigonometry.<br />

MA 151 ALGEBRA AND TRIGONOMETRY<br />

(Class 5, Cr. 5)<br />

Prerequisite: MA 041, High school Geometry, placement test or MA<br />

031 recommended.<br />

This course is intended for students who meet the requirements<br />

for admission to those departments whose curricula<br />

require MA 163 but whose background is insufficient for<br />

direct placement into MA 163. Not open to students with<br />

credit in MA 147, MA 148, MA 153 or MA 154.<br />

MA 153 ALGEBRA AND TRIGONOMETRY I<br />

(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />

Prerequisite: MA 041 and MA 031 NOT open to students with credit in<br />

MA 147 148, or 151.<br />

The content of MA 153, 154 is similar to that of MA 151 but<br />

the pace and emphasis is directed to students who do not<br />

intend to take MA 163. MA 153 is College Algebra.<br />

MA 154 ALGEBRA AND TRIGONOMETRY II<br />

(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />

Prerequisite: MA 153NOT open to students wit credit in MA 148 or 151.<br />

Continuation of MA 153. MA 154 is Trigonometry.<br />

MA 159 PRECALCULUS<br />

(Class 5, Cr. 5)<br />

Prerequisite: MA 031 and MA 041<br />

Algebra and Trigonometry topics designed to prepare students<br />

for calculus.<br />

MA 163 INTEGRATED CALCULUS<br />

AND ANALYTIC GEOMETRY I<br />

Prerequisite: MA 151 with a C or better<br />

Topics from plane analytic geometry. Introduction to differentiation<br />

and integration. Applications.<br />

MA 164 INTEGRATED CALCULUS<br />

AND ANALYTIC GEOMETRY II<br />

(Class 5, Cr. 5)<br />

Prerequisite: MA 163 with a C or better<br />

Continuation of MA 163. Completion of introductory study<br />

of topics in plane analytic geometry and the calculus of one<br />

variable, infinite series.<br />

MA 205 DISCRETE MATHEMATICS<br />

FOR COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY<br />

(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />

Prerequisite: MA 147 or MA 153 with a C or better<br />

The course covers topics in discrete mathematics which are<br />

essential to the discipline of computer technology. These<br />

include: logic, sequences, mathematical introduction, basic<br />

set theory, functions, recursion, relations, graphs, and trees.<br />

MA 214 LINEAR ALGEBRA AND LINEAR PROGRAMMING<br />

(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />

Prerequisite: MA 153 with a C or better<br />

Matrix algebra, systems of equations, topics from discrete<br />
