LAS 271 LATIN AMERICA TO 1824<br />

A survey of Latin American history from its origins to the<br />

end of the major movements toward independence, with<br />

emphasis on discovery, colonization, expansion, and the<br />

transfer of institutions from Spain and Portugal.<br />

LAS 272 LATIN AMERICAN SINCE 1824<br />

(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />

A survey of Latin American History from independence to<br />

the present with particular attention on political, economic,<br />

social problems connected with modernization.<br />

LAS 330 US AND LATIN AMERICA<br />

This course will explore political, economic and social<br />

aspects of relations between the United States and various<br />

Latin American Nations from independence to the present.<br />

LAS 340 LATIN AMERICAN POPULATION ISSUES<br />

Explores demographic changes and migration trends relating to<br />

Latin America. Topics addressed will include internal and external<br />

migration, birth rates and international population policy.<br />

LAS 373 THE CARIBBEAN<br />

(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />

Will explore various topics and issues unique to the<br />

Caribbean. Emphasis will be placed on European and African<br />

influence on the complex nature of Caribbean history, languages,<br />

literature, societies and cultures. Students may take<br />

the course for credit in either Latin American Studies or<br />

History, but not both.<br />

LAS 376 LATIN AMERICAN CINEMA<br />

(Class 2, Lab. 2, Cr. 3)<br />

A study of films produced in Latin America or addressing<br />

Latin American topics/issues. Students will engage in critical<br />

analysis of the films, and expect to develop greater understanding<br />

of the social context of subjects introduced. May<br />

include documentaries or feature films. Approximately<br />

2 hours each week will be devoted to viewing films and<br />

2 hours to class lecture/discussion.<br />

LAS 377 LATINO/HISPANIC CINEMA<br />

(Class 2, Lab. 2, Cr. 3)<br />

A study of films produced by Hispanic-Americans and/or<br />

depicting the Hispanic American experience. Students will<br />

engage in critical analysis of the films and expect to develop<br />

greater understanding of the social context of subjects<br />

introduced. May include documentaries of feature films.<br />

Approximately two hours each week will be devoted to<br />

viewing films, and two hours to class lecture/discussion.<br />

An exploration of the history of Hispanic immigration into<br />

the <strong>Calumet</strong> Region. The course will include an examination<br />

of cultural diversity, politics, community organizations, and<br />

contributions of local Hispanic-Americans.<br />

A history of the Mexican people from the pre-Columbian<br />

period to the present. Special emphasis is placed on the successful<br />

social revolutions that led to the development of<br />

today's dynamic nation.<br />

LAS 480 PRACTICUM IN LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES<br />

(Class 1 to 3, Cr. 1 to 3)<br />

This course is designed to offer students credit for field experience<br />

in Latin American Studies. Work may include study<br />

abroad, community service or research. May be repeated<br />
