EDCI 309 READING IN MIDDLE<br />

AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS<br />

(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />

Prerequisite: EDCI 320 and EDPS 260<br />

A course for prospective secondary teachers. Emphasis place<br />

on techniques and strategies of teaching reading in secondary<br />

classrooms and incorporation of reading skills in the various<br />

content areas. Attention is given to teaching reading skills and<br />

providing for students of varying reading abilities. Provision<br />

for simulated activities, field experiences and observations.<br />

EDCI 311 MEDIA FOR CHILDREN<br />

(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />

Books, films, filmstrips, records, magazines and other<br />

resources provided in elementary media centers are studied<br />

and evaluated to meet the personal and educational needs of<br />

pupils in elementary schools. Emphasis is on wide reading of<br />

children's books and viewing of many media and their utilization<br />

with children.<br />

EDCI 317 TEACHING OF SCIENCE IN THE<br />

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM<br />

Prerequisite: EDCI 316 and EDCI 321 and SCI 112 and SCI 113<br />

Provides experiences in developing skills for teaching<br />

science as well as the understanding of appropriate subject<br />

matter: includes evaluation techniques and procedures.<br />

EDCI 320 PRINCIPLES OF PRACTICE IN<br />

ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS<br />

(Class 2, Lab. 3, Cr. 3)<br />

Prerequisite: EDPS 285 and EDCI 260 or EDCI 355<br />

This course provides the pre-service teacher with classroom<br />

management principles and strategies for the elementary or<br />

secondary school classroom. This course will also highlight<br />

the teacher's role in the community and the community's role<br />

in the educational process. Because the nature of the classroom<br />

management differs substantially across developmental<br />

levels, separate course sections will be offered for elementary<br />

and middle/secondary students.<br />

EDCI 321 LITERACY AND THE YOUNG CHILD<br />

(Class 2, Lab. 3, Cr. 3)<br />

Prerequisite: EDCI 320 and EDCI 355<br />

Explores aspects of child development and its relevance to<br />

literacy, including early development influences and preschool<br />

learning. This course examines methods and materials<br />

appropriate for grades K-2. Topics will include the instruction<br />

and assessment of students.<br />

EDCI 341 ENGLISH TEACHING IN SENIOR HIGH,<br />

JUNIOR HIGH & MIDDLE SCHOOL<br />

Prerequisite: EDPS 260 and EDCI 320<br />

Acquaints students with developmentally appropriate content<br />

methods and materials for teaching high school, junior high,<br />

and middle school English. Includes an overview of the role<br />

of the high school, junior high, and middle school English<br />

teacher today, the high school, junior high and middle school<br />

philosophy, the use of technology, and planning of instructional<br />

units. Field experiences are integrated with classroom<br />

instruction.<br />

EDCI 342 STRATEGIES OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE<br />

INSTRUCTION IN SENIOR HIGH JUNIOR HIGH<br />

& MIDDLE SCHOOL<br />

Prerequisite: EDCI 320 and EDPS 260<br />

Acquaints students with developmentally appropriate content<br />

methods and materials for teaching senior high school, junior high<br />

and middle school foreign language and culture. Comparative<br />

studies of various teaching methods, analysis of current foreign<br />

language textbooks and accompanying materials, use of technology,<br />

and planning of instructional units are included Field experiences<br />

junior high and middle school science teacher today, the high<br />

school, junior high and middle school philosophy, use of<br />

technology and planning of instructional units. Field experiences<br />

are integrated with classroom instruction.<br />
