(Class 1 to 4, Cr. 1 to 4)<br />

Prerequisite: Admission to the Honor Program.<br />

Restricted to honors program students, this course will<br />

involve an investigation of a specific problem or topic.<br />

HONR 400 HONOR CAPSTONE PROJECT<br />

(Class 1 to 3, Cr. 1 to 3)<br />

Prerequisites: Admission to Honors Program.<br />

Restricted to students in the honors program with at least<br />

Junior standing. This is an upper level honors course mandating<br />

a major supervised research effort or practicum resulting<br />

in a written report and public, oral dissemination.<br />

Prerequisite: Admission to Honors Program.<br />

Study of the biology and technology involved in the production,<br />

fruits, vegetables, and other horticultural plants.<br />

HSCI 105 FACTS OF LIFE<br />

(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />

The study of the human body in health and disease. Topics<br />

include basic structure and function of the human body and an<br />

overview of human biology and an human biology related to<br />

genetics, evolution, impact on the environment, and human<br />

wellness issues. Career opportunities will be discussed.<br />

HSCI 200 PRECEPTORSHIP IN THE MEDICAL SCIENCES<br />

(Lab. 1)<br />

Prerequisites: Sophomore or higher standing and consent<br />

of the preceptorship committee.<br />

The course is designed to provide a pre-professional school<br />

experience for students seeking careers in fields such as medicine,<br />

dentistry and physical therapy. Individual programs<br />

will be designed by the health professional advisor, the student<br />

and a practicing health professional. The student will<br />

spend one week in a clinical study under the direction of<br />

health professionals. Such units as hospital rotations, dental<br />

office experience, government health office experience, etc.,<br />

will be included. A written report of the experience will be<br />

made to the advisor and cooperating health professionals.<br />

HSCI 230 INTRODUCTION TO PARAMEDICINE<br />

(Class 4, Cr. 4)<br />

This course includes instruction in the roles and responsibility<br />

of the paramedic, orientation to the hospital and field settings,<br />

medical legal aspects of care, patient assessment, trauma<br />

management, management of stress and behaviroal emergencies,<br />

pastoral care orientation, pre-hospital scene management,<br />

universal precautions, hazardous materials identification<br />

and response.<br />

HSCI 231 PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF DISEASE STATES<br />

(Class 4, Cr. 4)<br />

The pathophysiology, assessment and treatment of shock as<br />

well as review of fluid and electrolyte abnormalities in medical<br />

emergencies will be examined.<br />

HSCI 232 INTRODUCTION TO ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY<br />

(Cr. 4)<br />

Review of topographica anatomy, cellular anatomy<br />

and physiology and human organ systems.<br />

HSCI 233 EMERGENCY PHARMACOLOGY<br />

(Class 4, Cr. 4)<br />

Emphasis of this course is therapeutic effects, indications,<br />

route of administration, dosages, and side effects of medications<br />

used in the pre-hospital setting. Techniques of venipuncture,<br />

intravenous, cannulation, precutaneous injection, arterial<br />

blood gas analysis, nasograstic intubation and urinary<br />

catheterization are taught.<br />

HSCI 234 CARDIOPULMONARY EMERGENCIES<br />

(Class 4, Cr. 4)<br />

Pathophysiology, assessment and treatment of cardiopulmonary<br />

emergencies are discussed. Fundamentals of airway<br />

management electro cardiology, and interpretation of normal<br />

and abnormal ECG patterns are studied. Effects of medications<br />

on the cardiopulmonary system is emphasized.<br />

HSCI 235 MEDICAL AND<br />

ENVIRONMENTAL EMERGENCIES<br />

(Class 4, Cr. 4)<br />

Topics discussed include neurological environmental, pediatric,<br />

obstetric, gynecological, endocrine and toxicological<br />

emergencies. Special emphasis on the needs of the geriatric,<br />

psychiatric and communicable diseases patient will be<br />

stressed.<br />

HSCI 236 ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT<br />

(Class 4, Cr. 4)<br />

American Heart Association cardiopulmonary resuscitation<br />

standards, advanced cardiac life support lectures and practical<br />

skills stations will be taught. Advanced Cardiac Life Support<br />

certification will be achieved.<br />

HSCI 237 PREHOSPITAL SEARCH AND RESCUE<br />

(Lab. 2, Cr. 1)<br />

This course provides classroom and field experiences designed<br />

to expose the student to effective search and rescue operations.<br />

Concepts explored include incident command, disaster triage<br />

techniques, principles of extrication, water high rise and<br />

confined space rescue.<br />

HSCI 238 CLINICAL EXPERIENCES I<br />

(Lab. 2, Cr. 1)<br />

Prerequisite: HSCI 230 and HSCI 231<br />

This course provides the clinical setting to correlate the knowledge<br />

objectives from HSCI 230 and HSCI 231. Included are<br />

rotations in the Emergency Department, Social Services,<br />

Behavioral Treatment Center, Pastoral Care and Pathology.<br />

HSCI 239 CLINICAL EXPERIENCES II<br />

(Cr. 1)<br />

Prerequisite: HSCI 238<br />

A continuum of HSCI 238 with an emphasis on invasive<br />

techniques in critical care units. Rotation in the Emergency<br />

Department, Clinical Laboratory (including morgue) Surgery,<br />

Anesthesiology, Cardiovascular, and Medical Intensive Care<br />

Units are provided. Exposure to Cardiac Cauterization and<br />

Telemetry is included.<br />

HSCI 240 CLINICAL EXPERIENCES III<br />

(Cr. 2)<br />

Prerequisite: HSCI 238 and HSCI 239<br />

Students will be rotated through pediatrics, nursery, obstetrics,<br />

neuro sugrical intensive care unit, physical medicine and<br />

rehabilitation. Geriatric extended care facility a continuation<br />

of Emergency Department, Critical Care Units, and sampling<br />

of other hospital-based specialty care areas will be included.<br />

HSCI 241 FIELD INTERSHIP I<br />

(Cr. 1)<br />

In this course students are assigned to paramedics in the<br />

pre-hospital setting, performing assessment, treatments,<br />

documentation and pre-hospital field communications<br />

under direct supervision.<br />
