Resources, Services and Facilities<br />

Mission Statement<br />

Student Services, a primary partner for holistic learning<br />

and development at <strong>Purdue</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Calumet</strong>, is<br />

committed to assisting students and customers. We<br />

provide exemplary services of critical intervention,<br />

community outreach, sound instruction and strong<br />

leadership to create an intentionally inclusive environment<br />

that fosters maximum learning.<br />

Students with Disabilities<br />

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act<br />

(ADA), all qualified students enrolled in a course are<br />

entitled to reasonable accommodations. It is the student’s<br />

responsibility to have disability documentation on file<br />

in the Office of Student Support Services and to inform<br />

the instructor of any special needs before the end of the<br />

second week of classes.<br />

Academic Advising<br />

Each academic department and school and the Center for<br />

Student Achievement offer academic advising for specific<br />

programs of study. Students consult their academic advisors<br />

for information on program requirements and career<br />

options in their majors. Every student has an academic<br />

advisor and is expected to meet with the advisor at least<br />

once a semester.<br />

Information Center<br />

The Information Center is a starting place to gain general<br />

information about the university and the campus. The<br />

Information Center is staffed by knowledgeable people<br />

who can further direct students to more specific sources<br />

of campus information.<br />

The Counseling Center<br />

Gyte Building, Room 5, 219/989-2366.<br />

The Counseling Center offers a range of psychological<br />

and career counseling services to all students at <strong>Purdue</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>Calumet</strong> toward enhancing student academic<br />

and personal success and career satisfaction. Services are<br />

provided in individual, couples, or group formats and<br />

include assessment, brief counseling and psychotherapy,<br />

referral, consultation, and psychoeducational workshops.<br />

These services are provided by licensed mental health<br />

professionals and postgraduate counselors under their<br />

supervision. All psychological services are confidential<br />

as protected by law.<br />

Personal issues such as adjustment to college/work,<br />

relationship concerns, anxiety, depression, alcohol and<br />

drug use, body image/eating problems are only some<br />

of the many concerns that may be addressed in brief<br />

psychotherapy. As needed, referrals to qualified<br />

professionals in the community are made available.<br />

The <strong>Purdue</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Calumet</strong> Library is designed to<br />

sustain the accessible, trusted, and indispensable learning<br />

environment that is fundamental to student academic<br />

achievement in college.<br />

Its academic goals are to deliver high quality information,<br />

provide excellent guidance in its use, and promote learning<br />

in an attractive, technologically advanced, and personally<br />

comfortable environment.<br />

The Library helps students learn strategies and skills for<br />

accessing information and using it effectively for their<br />

class work.<br />

The Library Web site www.calumet.purdue.edu/library/ is<br />

a link to scholarly information in all formats - books,<br />

journals, reference guides, and archives. Services for the<br />

user, including interlibrary loan, reference assistance and<br />

requests for purchase, are available 24-7 via links on the<br />

Library’s Web site. Click on the quick link on the <strong>Purdue</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>Calumet</strong> home page for easy access to Library<br />

resources.<br />

At the Library, students learn how to search PULSE, the<br />

Web-based online catalog, to locate resources that the<br />

Library owns, search electronic databases to retrieve<br />

journal articles in full text, and organize and carry out<br />

research projects.<br />

The Library faculty, staff, and student assistants are here<br />

to help students learn in today’s complex information<br />

environment. The Library provides individual assistance<br />

to each student. The Reference Desk, located in the center<br />

of the Library, is the place for students to begin their<br />

research. Library instruction sessions, which include<br />

pre-and post-tests of student information literacy, are<br />

scheduled at the request of professors.<br />

Open 75 hours per week, the Library is a haven for<br />

student learning. The Library learning environment<br />

includes such amenities as study rooms for group<br />

projects, an electronic classroom for hands on learning,<br />

leisure seating for quiet conversation and a place to meet,<br />

and individual carrels for quiet study. A high-tech presentation<br />

practice room will open during fall 2006. The<br />

source for virtual and print documents about the university,<br />

Archives and Special Collections, was recently renovated<br />

to better accommodate scheduled classes and regular<br />

exhibitions. The ACCESS Center provides hardware and<br />

software to accommodate the needs of differently-abled<br />

students.<br />

The Library’s print collection includes 269,000 volumes<br />

and 1,200 current journal subscriptions. About 5,000 new<br />

volumes are added each year. The Library also subscribes<br />

to 3,000 electronic journals and 1,300 electronic books.<br />

New links to electronic resources are added weekly. The<br />

Library has nearly 800,000 microforms as well as a digital<br />

reproduction system that provides laser quality copies<br />

of microforms.<br />
