SPANISH SPEAKING AMERICANS<br />

The study of the literature of Chicano and Puerto Rican<br />
authors. Poetry, plays, short stories and novels presented in<br />
survey form so as to cover fairly themes from each Spanishspeaking<br />
population segment in contemporary American life.<br />
Intermediate knowledge of Spanish is needed because of<br />
dialecticism in many of the contemporary works.<br />
SPAN 435 SPANISH AMERICAN<br />
LITERATURE TO MODERNISM<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 202<br />
The study of the development of Spanish American literature<br />
from the early chronicles to the end of the 19th century with<br />
consideration of the pre-Hispanic background.<br />
SPAN 436 SPANISH AMERICAN LITERATURE<br />
FROM MODERNISM TO PRESENT<br />
(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />
Prerequisite: SPAN 202<br />
A continuation of SPAN 435. The study of the development<br />
of Spanish American literature beginning with the Modernist<br />
period to the present.<br />
SPAN 451 SPANISH CIVILIZATION<br />
(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />
The study of modern Spanish life with regard to the social<br />
institutions and customs. Lectures in the language.<br />
SPAN 461 INTERMEDIATE SPANISH COMPOSITION<br />
(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />
Prerequisite: SPAN 261 or SPAN 313<br />
A continuation of SPAN 261. In this course, stress is given to<br />
the development of more complex grammar and its application<br />
in the written language. Emphasis is placed on the structure of<br />
composition and basic refinement and precision brought about<br />
by grammar and vocabulary.<br />
SPAN 465 INTERMEDIATE SPANISH CONVERSATION<br />
(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />
Prerequisite: SPAN 365 or SPAN 313<br />
Continued practice in Spanish conversation, and the study of<br />
phonetics for accuracy in pronunciation and intonation.<br />
Students are encouraged to study contemporary culture as a<br />
basis for their conversations.<br />
SPAN 473 INTERMEDIATE SPANISH TRANSLATION<br />
(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />
Prerequisite: SPAN 373<br />
The continuation of SPAN 373 to include more extensive and<br />
more difficult translations. Also, a presentation of theoretical<br />
concepts concerning translation, and an orientation to<br />
research materials for translation purposes.<br />
SPAN 481 SPANISH CULTURE<br />
(Class 3, Cr. 3)<br />
The development of the cultural life of the Spanish people,<br />
as reflected in the geography, history, music, art, and architecture<br />
of Spain. Lectures in Spanish.<br />
SPAN 482 LATIN AMERICAN CIVILIZATION<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 202 or SPAN 313<br />
An outline of Latin American history; the cultural heritage<br />
from Spain and from the pre-Spanish civilizations; the intellectual,<br />
social, and cultural progress of the Latin American<br />
countries. Lectures in the language.<br />

SPAN 546 THE SPANISH NOVEL FROM<br />
REGIONALISM THROUGH THE GENERATION OF ‘98<br />

The study of the 19th-century novel from the costumbristas<br />
to Galdos. The social and aesthetic preoccupations of the<br />
Generation of ‘98. Lectures and readings from representative<br />
