This course focuses on a critical examination of the relations<br />

between theory and practice in early childhood programs.<br />

Special attention is given to programs for children from<br />

diverse linguistic, cultural and economic backgrounds,<br />

and children with disabilities.<br />

and ecosystems; adaptive strategies of organisms to interactions<br />

with other organisms and their environments. Emphasis<br />

on field studies and techniques and methods of sampling in<br />

aquatic and terrestrial communities.<br />

BIOL 593 ETHOLOGY<br />

Animal behavior is analyzed in natural and experimental<br />

situations. Emphasis is on the observation of wild and domesticated<br />

animals. The effect of early experience, motivation, physiological<br />

mechanisms, adaptiveness and the evolution of behavior<br />

are considered.<br />

CDFS 551 PARENTING INTERVENTIONS<br />

Prerequisite: A total of 15 hours in education, psychology or child<br />

development.<br />

Critical examination of the design, implementation and effect<br />

of programs aimed at promoting parents’ child-rearing competencies.<br />

Attention to diverse types of interventions including<br />

programs focused on information dissemination, interpersonal<br />

relationships, and family support systems. Emphasis on the<br />

theoretical and empirical bases of program development<br />

decisions.<br />

CDFS 590 CONSTRUCTIVIST FAMILY THERAPIES<br />

(Cr. 0 to 5)<br />

Investigation of theory, research, and practice of constructivist<br />

and social constructionist family therapies. Readings will<br />

include a wide range of original work of major theorists such<br />

as White, de Shazer, and Anderson and Goolishian.<br />

CDFS 601 ADVAMCED CHILD DEVELOPMENT<br />

(Class 2, Lab. 2, Cr. 3)<br />

An advanced survey of selected dimensions of children's<br />

development from birth through middle and later childhood.<br />

Particular attention is given to the roles of parents and teachers<br />

in influencing children's personal, social, emotional and intellectual<br />

behavior and development. A supervised practicum with<br />

the children in laboratory settings accompanies the course.<br />

and recent contributions in the field of family studies. Topics<br />

include both classic and recent contributions in the field of<br />

family studies. Other topics include major theory and research,<br />

historical, current, and future critical issues in family studies.<br />

CDFS 603 THEORIES OF FAMILY THERAPY<br />

An examination of the history of family therapy, major family<br />

therapy theorists, and therapy treatment modalities.<br />
