<strong>in</strong> darkness.<br />

Suddenly a loud beat<strong>in</strong>g of drums is heard ;<br />

then silence<br />

follows. The companies face about, each <strong>in</strong> turn ;<br />

the first<br />

l<strong>in</strong>es move, and the regiment starts. After pass<strong>in</strong>g a narrow<br />

little bridge over the <strong>di</strong>tch which separates<br />

the field from the<br />

road, the l<strong>in</strong>es close up, and a mass of lights are seen mov<strong>in</strong>g<br />

now forward, now backward, accord<strong>in</strong>g to the motion of the<br />

crowd, and start up two by two, extend on the sides of the<br />

straight road <strong>in</strong> a double l<strong>in</strong>e, and little by little s<strong>in</strong>k <strong>in</strong> the<br />

<strong>di</strong>stance <strong>in</strong>to<br />

two lum<strong>in</strong>ous streaks which w<strong>in</strong>d and undulate<br />

like two great re<strong>in</strong>s of fire shaken at the end of the column.<br />

On they march, and for a short time is heard a subdued<br />

chatt<strong>in</strong>g, which gradually <strong>di</strong>es away <strong>in</strong>to profound silence,<br />

broken only by the rough voices of the officers who grumble,<br />

As the silence <strong>in</strong>creases, sleep (that torment<strong>in</strong>g and terrible<br />

companion of nocturnal marches) beg<strong>in</strong>s to take possession of<br />

all. Unfortunate he who is seized by No it former ! rest, nor<br />

chat with friend, nor strong liquor, nor effort of will can conquer<br />

it ;<br />

he must give up to it entirely.<br />
