orders of their superiors, or could doubt the rectitude, <strong>di</strong>scuss<br />

the fitness, or deny the duty of obe<strong>di</strong>ence. Thus, little by<br />

little, the sentiment of religion took the place of that of <strong>di</strong>scipl<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

and that which would have been done unwill<strong>in</strong>gly from<br />

force, was done most gladly from an impulse of charity. On<br />

the other hand, that affectionate solicitude which the officers<br />

had <strong>di</strong>splayed for the sol<strong>di</strong>ers on every occasion, <strong>in</strong> visit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

them <strong>in</strong> the hospitals, assist<strong>in</strong>g them with their own money,<br />

comfort<strong>in</strong>g, counsell<strong>in</strong>g, and protect<strong>in</strong>g them, had produced<br />

such an effect, that <strong>in</strong> the hearts of the latter the sentiments<br />

of gratitude and duty <strong>in</strong>term<strong>in</strong>gled <strong>in</strong> such a way<br />

as to<br />

take away even the idea that they could be separated or<br />

opposed. Understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>di</strong>scipl<strong>in</strong>e as it is and ought to be,<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples upon which it is based and moves,<br />

the aims to which it tends, and the effects it obta<strong>in</strong>s, even the<br />

<strong>in</strong>tellect of the humblest sol<strong>di</strong>er takes <strong>in</strong> this great e<strong>di</strong>fice, the<br />

army comprehends the praiseworthy comb<strong>in</strong>ation and harmony<br />

of the forces by which it is ruled feels that<br />

foundations for the warmest affections of the family, and the<br />

most sacred laws of religion ,<br />

and as he goes on contemplat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the whole, he sees it rise and become illum<strong>in</strong>ed on a height<br />

which neither the declamations of philosophers nor the compla<strong>in</strong>ts<br />

of the common people can reach. This was the effect<br />

produced upon the sol<strong>di</strong>ers ;<br />

<strong>in</strong> this way <strong>di</strong>scipl<strong>in</strong>e was enforced.<br />

And the country ?<br />

The most splen<strong>di</strong>d proof of the effect produced upon the<br />

country by the magnificent conduct of the army was given by<br />

the Sicilian people at the end of '67, and has been repeated recently,<br />

the dearest proof that could be given to the army
