Carmela had not been feel<strong>in</strong>g well for some days, and had<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>ed at home almost all the time. The officei and the<br />

doctor went to look for her. She was seated on the ground<br />

outside the door, with her back lean<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st the wall. As<br />

soon as she saw them she rose, and mov<strong>in</strong>g a trifle more slowly<br />

than usual, went toward the lieutenant and tried, as was her<br />

habit, to embrace him, murmur<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> a feeble voice, her customary<br />

words.<br />

"Carmela ! said the lieutenant, " we have a piece of news<br />

for you."<br />

A piece of news, a piece of news, a piece of news," repeated<br />

Carmela, gently pass<strong>in</strong>g the palm<br />

times over the officer's cheek.<br />

" To-morrow I am go<strong>in</strong>g away."<br />

" To-morrow I am go<strong>in</strong>g away<br />

Say<strong>in</strong>g which he rased his arm as if to <strong>in</strong><strong>di</strong>cate a great <strong>di</strong>stance.<br />

Far, far away," murmured Carmela, look<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the <strong>di</strong>rection<br />

the officer had po<strong>in</strong>ted. She seemed to be th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />
