and break<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>in</strong>to exclamations of<br />

surprise <strong>in</strong> see<strong>in</strong>g<br />

some jump, and commiserat<strong>in</strong>g with a " Poor fellow, he must<br />

have hurt himself," those who have fallen. Then they comment<br />

upon the structure of the tents and the <strong>di</strong>visions of the<br />

camp, and expla<strong>in</strong> to one another the <strong>di</strong>fference of grade,<br />

judg<strong>in</strong>g from the bands on the caps, constantly <strong>in</strong>terrupt<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

and grow<strong>in</strong>g quite provoked at each other. At all po<strong>in</strong>ts of<br />

the road where there are two or three, or a group of young<br />

and pretty peasant girls, there is<br />

correspond<strong>in</strong>gly <strong>in</strong> the camp,<br />

right on the opposite bank of the <strong>di</strong>tch, an unusual gather<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of<br />

sol<strong>di</strong>ers, who, like all men when they know women are look<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at them, make gestures, assume attitudes, and study their<br />

slightest movements, with a careful <strong>in</strong><strong>di</strong>fference, an <strong>in</strong>describable<br />

air of livel<strong>in</strong>ess and effrontery, that is really enterta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g ;<br />

and the peasants laugh and laugh, cover their faces with their<br />

hands, hide beh<strong>in</strong>d each other, or scatter and group themselves<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>, still laugh<strong>in</strong>g, whisper<strong>in</strong>g mysterious<br />

other's ears, and sometimes caress<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at the slightest breath of w<strong>in</strong>d, that they are obliged to<br />

a little hand on them and stand still for a moment to<br />

keep them <strong>in</strong> place.<br />

Those young la<strong>di</strong>es are bare-headed, and<br />

that light breeze stirs and <strong>di</strong>sarranges their sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g r<strong>in</strong>glets,
