The cholera had broken out at Menfi. The people were<br />

bo<strong>di</strong>es lay unburied for forty-eight hours. A rebellion was imm<strong>in</strong>ent.<br />

General Me<strong>di</strong>ci was <strong>in</strong>formed of the state of affairs<br />

by telegraph. The detachment of Sciacca received <strong>in</strong>stant orders<br />

to proceed to Menfi. Twenty-four hours afterward, the<br />

general received the follow<strong>in</strong>g despatch " The detachment<br />
