are," some one would say aloud. And another :<br />

" Take<br />

" care !<br />

The sol<strong>di</strong>ers passed, and the group formed aga<strong>in</strong>. Many, on<br />

see<strong>in</strong>g them com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the <strong>di</strong>stance toward them, would turn<br />

a street corner. Others, <strong>in</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g them, stood aside, and<br />

then stopped to look at them when they had passed with a<br />

curiosity mixed with horror and fear. In the quarters of<br />

the poor people, many closed their doors at their appearance,<br />

and went to the w<strong>in</strong>dows ; others half-opened the bl<strong>in</strong>ds<br />

and peeped through the cracks ;<br />

the women called <strong>in</strong> a loud<br />

voice to the children who were play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the middle of<br />

the street, or caught them by the arms and carried them<br />

hastily <strong>in</strong>to the house ;<br />

the children rushed here and there,<br />

turn<strong>in</strong>g back to make faces ;<br />

and as the sol<strong>di</strong>ers went on, the<br />

doors and w<strong>in</strong>dows were reopened, and the people appeared,<br />

once more look<strong>in</strong>g suspicious, <strong>in</strong>terrogat<strong>in</strong>g and reassur<strong>in</strong>g each<br />

other <strong>in</strong> turns by signs. Not <strong>in</strong>frequently the sol<strong>di</strong>ers heard<br />

shouts and words from with<strong>in</strong> which they could not understand,<br />

but which, judg<strong>in</strong>g by angry and mock<strong>in</strong>g tones, seemed<br />

undoubtedly <strong>in</strong>tended for them ;<br />

and rais<strong>in</strong>g their eyes to the<br />

w<strong>in</strong>dows they saw a face slowly appear, which, however, was<br />

withdrawn as soon as perceived, or perhaps only a hand put<br />

outside the sill and shaken <strong>in</strong> a menac<strong>in</strong>g way. At other times,<br />

<strong>in</strong> pass<strong>in</strong>g, they heard an open <strong>in</strong>sult or a curse muttered at<br />

their backs, or some <strong>in</strong>comprehensible word ; they turned and<br />

saw a face raised, look<strong>in</strong>g at the clouds <strong>in</strong> an abstracted manner.<br />

To call them to account for any <strong>in</strong>sult would be to gather the<br />

people and provoke a perfect tumult, so they kept silence and<br />

went on. Sometimes <strong>in</strong>stead of a word, they whirled a stone
